Ahoy,

My name is Dave.  I'm a member at Hive13 and just got my HAM license.  I'm interested in meshnets and all related topics.  I have a WRT54GS and am trying to acquire more routers to mesh together.  I'm interested in finding out what else other people have been working on.

i'm chris, i'm also a member at hive13. i was a military radio and
telephone operator in a previous life and i'm interested in using
wireless networks in 3 distinct sectors:
disaster relief
political dissent
alternate reality games

for all 3 sectors i think that a programmable open source AP/repeater/
server is the fundamental building block. i have a couple of open-
mesh routers and some voip gear that i would like to flash into self
contained darknets.

Hi all,

Im Alex; ditto for the hive13.   HAM license is on the list of things to do. mostly interested in mesh net theory currently, as applied to disaster relief as well as last mile rural/local communication.

ditto on the OSS AP; with one addition, price point.  the openmesh.com units look pretty snazzy, but im not sure if their $100/node price point for the dual band is good or not.  guess it comes down to how many and how large the meshnets/darknets in question are.

Howdy, another Hive13 member here (as is most everybody on the membership list so far I think).

I had a HAM license many years ago, and need to get it renewed. Some really interesting long range wireless networking stuff appears to be going on in this realm.

I've got several WRT54G routers floating around that I'd like to get working on some sort of mesh / repeater setup, just don't know enough about what projects are out there. Must be a better place to look than just putting 'mesh networking' in Wikipedia.

The areas Chris mentions are good ones. Another that has come up in my own work is mobile networks in rural locations, especially for getting data to and from agricultural vehicles.

My name is Brandon, and I am also a Hive13 member. I've been doing
router firmware modding for as long as anyone, and currently into the
reversing of hardware for the purposes of installing third party
firmware. Sometimes I also wear very tight Wikipedia shirts. It
happens.

Hello, My name is Mike.  I have had my technician ticket for a coupla / three years now and while I have become bored with 2M FM radio I have been reading up on amateur radio uses of microwave for a little while.

Preparedness and EMComm have always been among my interests.

So far, I have flashed a Motorola WR850G to the HSMM-Mesh OpenWRT based firmware, but sadly the version I acquired on the cheap on Ebay does not have a detachable antenna, so I plan on using it for testing when I get my hands on a suitable router, or replace the WRT57GL currently in use as my home router.

Greetings,

My name is Ben. I am not currently a member of Hive13 (perhaps in the
future). I've been an extra class ham radio operator for awhile now
(NQ8C) with most of my interest in software defined radio, computer
controlled radio, and digital modes. I am also a graduate student in
Computer Engineering (with undergrad in Electrical Engineering). Last
year, I did my senior project on long distance high-speed digital
communication in the 2.4GHz band. I have quite a bit of hardware: 20W
2.4GHz amplifier, 2.4GHz -> 440MHz/140MHz downconverters with
conversion gain, and a variety of antennas. As a member of the UC
Amateur Radio club, I also have the ability to coordinate joint
ventures and get access to UCARC equipment.

I'm also Chris. I'm a Hive13 member with a degree in electrical
engineering from UC. In matters of amateur radio and wireless
communications, I'm pretty clueless, but I am interested in the
algorithmic & software side of things, what sort of topologies come
about in mesh networks, and what protocols work well under these
conditions.

The general notion of making networks less reliant on centralized
resources appeals to me for various reasons, and for the past several
years I've been interested in the styles of network that thrive under
slow or unreliable communication, uncertain topologies, and external
attacks.
