It's Saturday night, I'm kinda drunk, and I need some ham radio nerds and some networking nerds to help me fuck with this idea:

Marches and protests are going to be a regular thing all over the country, and here in the city. They are going to need coms that don't use Internet or mobile networks. My Verizon mobile barely worked at the Women's March in Washington Park and it was scary as shit. If this is going to be a regular thing, I think we need alternative radio and telephone networks.

For radio communication, this software looks really interesting:

It's very low bandwidth via audio over radio waves. Could serve as backhaul to interconnect mesh networks, or as a way to multicast bulletins and stuff.

Also, I have been watching this project over the years:

My VOIP Kung-Fu is improving and I am keen to talk to others about the possibilities of mesh phone networks too.

This is SRS BSNS but there's no reason it can't be fun too. I have wanted to play some radio/networking type games like wifi races and wifi shootouts for years.

Who's down to clown around with this?

Great hearing from you Dave. How do you want to get started?

I have no ham gear or licensure, but I have wifi shit. Also, I was a radio/telephone operator in the military, so I have a fair amount of experience with mobile/adhoc radio networks.

I am also interested in picking up either a wifi pineapple or a mesh potato, not sure which.

Also the new Raspberry Pi's look cool for battery powered network things.

I'm searching Google for "cincinnati mesh network" and this is about all I've found. Seems like good timing though? Group is inactive for 5 years and then comes back right around the time I'm getting interested.

Are there more than 3 people interested in the area? I'm super jealous of places like Oakland than are actually having "build your own internet workshops" and have dozens of nodes.
