I tried to get in, but couldn't use my "apps" email (apps email
accounts don't support Profiles yet!).

I signed up via my generic email, but haven't gotten "in" yet.

It's a private beta by invite right now according to the last paragraph of the blog:

We’re beginning in Field Trial, so you may find some rough edges, and the project is by invitation only. 

If anyone gets in, let the group know and send us some love!  (if you can invite others like you could with Google Wave)
