Hey folks,
Just wanted to let everyone know we're getting ready to kick off a
contest at Crazy Joe's in the Springfield Holiday Inn. This isn't
your typical contest, in the sense that there's no entry fee, there's
no bringer rule, and you can perform a second time if you don't
advance the first time (provided space is available). Here's the
scoop:
Carol Pennington, a Cleveland-based booker asked me to put this
contest together. Carol books one-nighters and weekend rooms
throughout Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New York,
Virginia, Indiana, and Wisconsin, plus a few others. Carol isn't easy
to get in with, but she's the real deal. I've worked for her for the
past four years, and every one of her rooms has been a blast. Anyway,
Carol wants to check out some of the local talent, so here's the plan:
1. Six comedians will perform in each preliminary round.
Preliminaries are July 1, July 15, July 29, August 12, and August 26.
2. Each week's winner will advance to a final showcase with Carol
Pennington headlining on September 9.
3. Winners will be determined by a combination of judge scorecards
and audience ballots.
4. One additional "wild card" pick from the second place contestants
will advance to the final showcase.
5. Contestants need to be prepared with ten minutes of original
material.
6. Contestants will get a light at nine minutes. If you go over on
time, you will be disqualified.
7. There are no content restrictions, but keep it appropriate for the
venue. This is a show for your more polished material.
8. You don't have to bring friends, but since audience ballots will
help determine the winner, it's definitely to your advantage.
So that's the story. There are no cash prizes, no trophies, and no
stars on the walk of fame. But it is a great opportunity to compete
with the area's best comedians, and the top six will perform with one
of the area's most prolific bookers. At the very least, Carol will
know six more names from the area, and hopefully some folks will pick
up a little more work as a result.
This contest is open to anyone. If you know of anybody who would like
to enter, please pass this along. To enter, send me an email and let
me know which date you'd like to perform. This will be first come,
first served. Beginners should realize you'll be competing head-to-
head against some seasoned comics. But don't let that stop you. At
the very least, we'll all have a fun time and give the Springfield
folks some great shows. And for the audience, the show is free with
no food/drink minimums. Only thing is, they have to be 21 or over.
Give me a yell if you have any questions.
