Hello Everyone,

I just found out this week that many hair, body and makeup products contain gluten!

Many of you may already be aware of this but I wasn't.

Within the past year I have had two trips to the eye doctor for mystery eyelid inflammation and basically he told me to just stop wearing mascara.

Guess what? Most mascara has gluten in it!

Now most people don't have reactions like I do because I am extremely sensitive and I have dermititus herpetiformus (DH), the skin reaction to gluten.

Good news though, there are a number of gluten free makeup lines are sprouting up and a great website dedicated to gluten free makeup and I will pass it along. http://www.glutenfreemakeupgal.com

Just to be safe , read those labels. What we put on our body ends up in our blood stream and what we put on our hair ends up on our skin in the shower. Goodbye favorite expensive hair gel!

Have a great weekend.

I had the same issues, I found Red Apple Lipstick, absolutely wonderful.  They also offer eye shadows now too.    redapplelipstick.com

I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in September of 2012. I am also unable to eat any dairy. I have also eliminated all corn, rice and chocolate from my diet as I seemed to be reacting to them. I basically eat the Paleo Diet.

I had the same issues with makeup! I had used Clingue for 40 years! What a difference now that I have stopped using Clinque lotion! My skin is so much clearer! My blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelashes) seems to have disappeared! I have found No. 7 cosmetics, available at Target, are gluten free. Only their lipstick (lipgloss is safe) contains gluten. I really like their mascaras.
My hair has also changed! I use the Moroccan line of shampoos.

Make sure you check any nuts you buy! You may think they are gluten free! Check the package carefully! Most say, " Processed in a plant that also processes wheat, dairy..." Some don't even say that! I called Fisher Nuts because I was having a reaction. There is nothing on their package. Sure enough, they are processed in plants that process wheat.

Grace-- you mentioned blepharitis---inflammation of eyelids . I have that too. Is that another issue caused by Celiac? I use Clinque under eye cover. I wonder if that has wheat in it. Crap ..... We just can't escape wheat anywhere!!! :(

Renee,

Having Celiac Disease has dramatically changed my life. I was totally a foodie!! I made amazing meals, baked incredible desserts! Oh how my life has ABRUPTLY changed!!!

I have been amazed at the "issues" that have cleared up since eliminating gluten!!! In addition to blepharitis, I had nail fungus in one of my big toes... gone!!! The pains in my joints... gone!!! My incredibly painful lower back... seems to be gone!!

I have read LOTS about gluten. My favorite is Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis. His book has truly changed my life!!

I am beyond disappointed in Clinque!! Please switch to a gluten free brand. Gluten is in almost everything!!

MOST people DO NOT understand Celiac Disease.

I went to Jungle Jim's in Eastgate yesterday. There is a smoothie shop just inside the entrance door. A man (possibly the owner) was giving out samples. I declined his sample. He asked why. I said I have Celiac Disease. He replied that the samples only contained bananas and strawberries. I declined. He persisted. He said he has many friends who are Celiacs. I still declined. Being a new Celiac, I was unprepared for his pressuring. Later I wish I had mentioned cross-contamination!!

We must be diligent. Truly our lives depend on being gluten free.

On the bright side they are working on a medication type cure.  Check out the University of Chicago Celiac Dept.  In 10 years we will eat like everyone else.

Hmmmmmmmmm... I will check out the University of Chicago Celiac Dept. I must admit that I am not sure that a medication is the path I want to take. My husband takes MANY medications to control MANY issues. I look at him and know that I do not want to depend on medications to keep me "well"! Perhaps I am too much an optimist, but I hope to be able to control my Celiac by eating correctly.

I also have DH, and have had reactions to shampoo.  A lot of shampoos contain Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils or Modified Food Startch, which contain gluten. But I have also found a lot that don't..... now  I just check the ingredients, and I haven't had any problems since.

You do know that modified food starch if manufactured in the US is gluten free.  It is corn starch!!

Yes, and so is carmel coloring if made in the US.  But global companies (which are most of the shampoo manufacturers) tend to source their ingredients from the lowest-cost supplier, which could be anywhere in the world. And typically when modified food starch is made from corn not wheat, it will say (Corn) in parenthesis.  So when I don't know, or if it does not say GF,  I tend to err on the side of caution.

but thanks for commenting, as I am sure most people do not know this.
