Hi all--just happened to look at the ingredients in my daughter's Kellogg's Frosted Flakes. Only thing I questioned was the "malt flavoring" Is that GF???--I know to stay away from malt but was wondering if "malt flavoring" was a true malt or a fake chemical flavoring like some flavoring is. I am REAL tired of the organic GF corn flakes and used to be a "cereal junkie" BC (Before Celiac) so I need variety!!

Tried the Enjoy Life cereal again yesterday but I just can't get past that "rancid petroleum " smell.

Thanks! Renee

According to my CSA gluten free product listing " malt flavoring refers to the extract form of malt used as a flavoring agent.  Generally from BARLEY.  See malt extract and malt."   The means it is something we CAN NOT eat.  The orgranic corn flakes are also very hard and can scratch up your mouth and throat if you eat them with your fingers without milk like I do.  Hopefully they jump on the Chex bandwagon and change the ingredients.  I have been eating Chex with no ill effects.
I like the BC (Before Celiac).  Another one I like is "glutened" that I think I picked up from Jill Perkins.
I am glad to see you have power and internet service.  I hope everyone had some non-parashible GF food to eat.  According to the red cross website if you have frozen baked goods including waffles and pancakes, they should be SAFE to eat ALTHOUGH the quality may have suffered.

Sorry, I guess I should specify.  I have been eating the RICE CHEX cereal.  The boxes we can eat say gluten free on the front.  If they do not say gluten free they are the old formula and contain malt.

You are correct that malt flavoring is derived from barley and is a NO, NO
to eat. There are other mainstream cereals besides the rice chex such as
Fruity Dyno-bites (I get them in the big bag), Fruity Pebbles (note the
chocolate ones are NOT gf last I checked), Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Berry
Crunch, Dora Stars, Little Einsteins Fruity Stars and Trix. My son loves the
fruity dyno-bites, van's gf blueberry waffles and I also make double batches
of gf pancakes (Pamela's brand) and freeze them after they've cooled
off...just pull a couple out at time, as needed. Envirokids also has several
GF cereals that are available at our local Kroger's as well as the health
food stores.

I also recently saw someone write that Cocoa Puffs may be GF but I have not
checked into it nor have I read a label on them lately. I'm going to
research it though and I'll keep you guys posted unless someone else already
knows.

Enjoy!

I am older and have found that I like the Nature's Path of Organic Honey'd
Corn Flakes. It is Gluten Free.
Meijers, Krogers, and Jungle Jim has this.
Hope this will help.

Frosted Flakes are NOT GF. A couple good GF mainstream cereals to try for
kids are "Rice Chex" and "Dora the Explorer" (which I could only find at
Biggs). Our 3 year old daughter eats both of these. Also, I think "Coco
Pebbles" are GF... if you want to go that sweet... but haven't tried them.

hmmm...maybe I was wrong when I said cocoa pebbles are not gf then...I
thought last time I read the label there was some gluten containing
ingredient(s)...I guess I'll have to look into that too

After trying a few cereals looking to replace frosted flakes I have been
eating EnviroKidz Amazon Frosted flakes. They still aren't as good as
Kellogg's, but what can you do. Trix is probably my favorite and my son's
is cocoa pebbles. Michelle

I guess I stand corrected then, apparently cocoa pebbles are gf...last I was told, they weren't. I also found this handy link today and thought I'd share it... it has a quick guide to gf cereals and non-gf cereal as well as links to various cereal companies websites.

Thanks everyone for all of the good ideas for "new" cereals. I am burnt out on the organic corn flakes and some of the other GF cereal in the organic departments are either too "sweet" ---more for kids--or just plain yukky! ha

I was at Kroger today and got a box of Rice Chex--I was soo excited! On the side of the box they advertise that Rice Chex is GF--and they have a website I am going to check out for GF recipes (I am assuming using their products.) www.Chex.com/glutenfree<http://www.Chex.com/glutenfree>

PS My 12 year old made a comment when she saw the Rice Chex box "Wow--mom got "normal" cereal today".... gee thanks kid--ha :)

I feel totally confused now too...so is Cocoa Pebbles gluten-free...anyone know for 100% sure? It lists caramel coloring as one of the ingredients so that's why I've stayed away from it.

Cocoa Puffs lists wheat as an ingredient right on the box, along with the food allergy warning at the bottom "contains wheat". I looked it up on their website.

Cocoa Krispies is not listed as safe on Kellogg's site...below is what they said about and gf items they carry. I didn't know their Eggo syrup was GF...has anyone been using this? Personally, I think the last paragraph could be misleading to someone who is new to the Celiac diet even though it says gluten "sensitivity" they may not realize that's a separate issue from Celiac.

From Kellogg's:
At this time, we do not offer products suitable for consumers on a gluten-free diet except as follows:

Kellogg's® Eggo™ Syrup, Kellogg's™ Fruit Flavored Snacks and Kellogg's® Yogos are formulated gluten- free and may be acceptable for consumers on restricted diets

Kellogg's® Corn Pops® and Kellogg's® Rice Krispies® might be suitable, depending on gluten sensitivity. Corn Pops have a very small amount of wheat starch added, and Rice Krispies have a small amount of malt flavoring, made from barley. Check with your personal physician to determine if these products are suitable for you.

some caramel is safe, some not.  you have to check with brands & products separately.  if you have a specific product in mind, you can google it & put up gluten free for a quick check.  if that doesn't give you what you need you can check with the manufacturer.  I found out that Kroger's ice creams with caramel are gluten free, something my daughter really likes, but I haven't done an exhaustive search on everything out there.  I know some things aren't gluten free.
I believe anything with malt made in the US has barley in it, so I stay away from that, but caramel is a gray area.

I'm pretty sure it is.  If it was made from wheat they'd have to say it on the label.  Most caramel is just sugar/corn syrup with cream and butter.  I guess you might have to watch if it was made from glucose syrup which can be made with wheat, but I have read the gluten does not get left in the syrup, so I wouldn't stress too much about it.

As for caramel color(ing), Gluten Free Living says:

Caramel color
Corn is used to make caramel color in the U.S.  The FDA does permit use of barley malt but all major caramel color producers say corn makes a better product.
