Welcome to the Dickcissel Dial (815) 200-8650 the central Illinois birding hotline sponsored by Wild Birds Unlimited in Springfield. Today is Wednesday, September 7th, 2022. A rare fall occurrence of Connecticut Warbler was found by Jarod Hitchings near Sherman. Other notable warblers making their way through central Illinois include Black-throated Blue, Pine, Orange-crowned, Cerulean, Prothonotary, and no longer considered a warbler the Yellow-breasted Chat.

Shorebird season is still going strong, particularly along the Illinois River: Black-bellied Plover, Red-necked Phalarope along with Baird's, Western, and  Buff-breasted Sandpipers. Black-necked Stilts & American Avocets at numerous sites. Black Tern in McLean, Yellow-crowned Night Heron & Lark Sparrow in Champaign, and an injured Snow Goose & Grasshopper Sparrow in Sangamon. Cattle Egret in Rock Island.

We had two winners Rhetta and the Martin Family last week with Hummingbird. This week's question is which woodpecker species drills parallel holes in trees which hummingbirds feed?

Remember the Black-capped Chickadee says "Cheeseburger" there's a saying: for warblers in the fall go where chickadees call.

Please leave answers and sightings and enjoy the outdoors!
