Hello bird people,

If anyone happens to be in the Springfield area for the eclipse, on Monday, we will be having an "ebird during the eclipse" event. I happen to be one of the bird guides!

Here's to clear skies,

Jarod Hitchings

Planning to observe the Great North American Eclipse on April 8?

As you prepare for the eclipse, also consider observing bird behavior during the sudden shift from “day” to “night”.

Pay attention to which species are present throughout the event and which ones demonstrate a change in behavior. Watch for nocturnal behaviors, singing (or sudden silence) nocturnal bird species emerging and changes in flight patterns.

eBird recommends submitting complete checklists that are stationary and between 5-10 minutes in duration and a 3-4 minute checklist during the period of actual totality.

Take a moment to orient yourself with your surroundings to better understand any changes that may happen. Once you’re right where you want to be, get comfortable, enjoy the eclipse and observe the changes in nature around you.
