Welcome to the Dickcissel Dial the Central Illinois Birding hotline sponsored by Wild Birds Unlimited in Springfield. Today is Wednesday, May 20th, 2022.

Multiple reports of indigo bunting and both black and yellow-crowned night herons. Notable sparrows include Eurasian tree, Le Conte's, Henslow's, and Lincoln's. Early Eastern kingbird, gray catbird, and Swainson's thrush.

Warblers returning include yellow, yellow-throated, black and white, palm, Nashville, Tennesse, hooded, parula, and orange-crowned. Two vireos: warbling and yellow-throated.

Marsh and wading birds: common gallinule, Virginia rail, American bittern, marsh wren, and blue heron. Waterfowl reports are Ross's goose, trumpeter swan, and greater-white fronted.

Answer to last week's question: the Ostrich has the largest eyes of any land animal. This week's trivia question: which local bird's call sounds like a squeaky dog toy in the fall?

Remember the chitter, chitter, chitter scold call of the Ruby-crowned kinglet while walking wooded trails this spring, especially near swampy thickets that border a stream.

Please leave answers and sightings after the message and enjoy the outdoors.
