Empty apartment to myself on a holiday - this is the time for a three-hour Bollywood classic. This is one of many movies in which Amitabh Bachchan played a character named Vijay, much like how Dick Miller was "Walter Paisley." In this one he's a poor boy who rises up through the criminal underworld in a long-game revenge quest against the heroin-dealing crime boss who framed and killed his father. Amitabh chews the scenery and sounds like he had a Darth Vader filter applied to his voice. The cinematography is striking, the action is ultraviolent, and the first musical sequence, which drops at 57 minutes, is a disco-themed number. Disco! In 1990! Very fun, needless to say.

Having only seen this in pan-and-scan versions previously, I was struck on this rewatch by how damn good the movie looks. Every surface seems to shimmer, perfectly catching the perpetual magic hour lighting. Every frame feels huge. We don't just look at things, we look at them throw imposing low angles, imposing crane shots, and imposing low angles that turn into imposing crane shots and vice versa. Interiors are captured with the full weight of the deep focus cinematography and smoky blue lighting. Characters wear flashy suits and hide behind designer sunglasses. Imagine an entire movie shot like the opening scenes of Beverly Hills Cop II and you get the idea.

Yes, thank you I will take my revenge drama larger than life operatic, gritty, big, and bleak. From dissonant screeching sounds of agony haunting people, minds, and desolate places over characters almost at the brink of madness to a man so caught up in bloody revenge his only response to anything is a threat to kill, even to his wife. It's melodrama showing trauma in its most lost, darkest, and bloodiest form, and I love it.

Mythic filmmaking taken to apocalyptic heights, combines that with very raw shots of riots, lynch mobs and poverty (with an amazing Ganesh chaturthi sequence near the end) and places the demigod figure of bachchan in the center of this to create one of his more fascinating characters and films.
The kind of film that lives and dies by amitabh bachchans body language- from the way he moves his hands to the way he kicks, all to create this doomed character that rarely feels human.
Hard not to watch this and feel a specific mode of filmmaking was coming to an end

The original version of the action thriller is one that got polarizing reviews when it was released, and ended up flopping at the box office, despite being the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year in India (this I find really bizarre), but it is due to its high budget.
