Have a model I sculpted in ZBrush (hence why it's so small), decimated, imported into maya, retopo'd with quad draw, used mirror to make the model symmetrical.
I've already done most of the obvious: ran 'select matching' on cleanup for each option individually. I made sure to merge vertices. I tried conform normals. Tried deleting the UV's and starting from camera based, normal based, automatic. I'm not sure what else there is that could be causing the issue?

Is this the recovered file I sent you last month? You haven't done the Uvs yet, you need to start with breaking up the shells by selecting the UV cuts, then there many ways to unfolded it, do that first an reload a new model if you have issues but first figure out your best edges to cut.

This is the same project yes but reimported into a new scene because for some reason an object within the original scene would cause maya to force close whenever I tried to delete/edit it (which is why I'm guessing I had the file opening problem in the first place although I'm still not sure why)

I understand I haven't done the UV's yet, because I cannot unfold a single part of the model without getting the error, Legacy unfold works but doesn't give good results. I understand how to unwrap something, the problem is the unfold function isn't working at all, and I've tried all the troubleshooting I would normally do alongside looking it up. I'm also not sure what you mean by 'reload a new model', I've already trying exporting it and reimporting it into the scene if that's what you mean.
