Call for Papers for the IEEE Conference on Games (CoG) 2023

The annual IEEE Conference on Games (IEEE CoG) seeks to be the premier venue for technical, scientific, and engineering work on video games, board games, and other types of games. Games offer a fantastic domain for computational creativity, game design, technology, education, social sciences and, undoubtedly, artificial and computational intelligence. IEEE CoG is a venue to discuss recent advances and explore future directions. 

 

Important Deadlines:

Competitions and tutorial proposal: 27th February 2023

Submission of full technical papers: 17th March 2023

Submission of auxiliary (competition, vision and demo) papers: 14th May 2023

Submission of camera-ready version of full technical papers: 28th May 2023

Games industry presentation proposals: 11th June 2023

Journal paper presentation proposals: 11th June 2023

Academic presentation proposals: 11th June 2023

Submission of camera-ready version of auxiliary papers: 25th June 2023

 

None of the deadlines will be extended. All deadlines are Anytime on Earth (AoE).

IEEE CoG 2023 will include presentations of peer-reviewed papers, invited talks by high-profile industry and academic leaders, panels, posters and demos. We welcome papers related to all aspects of games, including, but not limited to, the following topics:

 

  • Game design (frameworks, game mechanics, etc.)
  • Game animation
  • Game audio
  • Game graphics and networking
  • Game engines and authoring tools
  • Accessible and inclusive game design
  • Player/opponent modeling
  • Player experience studies
  • Game-playing AI
  • Psychology of play and player types
  • Automatic game testing
  • Procedural content generation
  • Games as test-beds for algorithms
  • Adaptation/personalization in games 
  • Gamification 
  • Serious/applied games (for health, sustainability, etc.)
  • Games for education, learning and development
  • Game user research
  • Game analytics, game data science, and data visualization
  • Novel game controls and interfaces
  • Extended reality (virtual reality, mixed reality, and augmented reality)
  • Esports and live streaming

 

Please note: CoG is not a conference about game theory, and does not accept papers about game theory unless they are applied to games people would play, such as video games or board games. 

 

Outstanding papers will be invited to submit an extended version to the IEEE Transactions on Games.

 

Competitions and Tutorial Proposals. Deadline on 27th February 2023

Competitions can focus on a wide variety of topics within the scope of CoG such as playing games, generation, recommendations, modeling, analytics, and data visualization. Competitions are typically based on well-known games but competitions based on custom-made and lesser-known games, as well as datasets from games are also welcome. The competition needs to define a set of rules and objectives for determining the score of each player. Tutorials are an opportunity to share your expertise and influence future research directions in the CoG community. Typically, tutorials are expected to run for 1.5 hours, but longer times will be considered. For all these proposals, submit 2 pages detailing the activity, including the organizer’s names. 

 

Full technical papers. Deadline on 17th March 2023

Full papers have an 8 page limit (including references and appendices), and should constitute a technical or empirical contribution to scientific, technical, or engineering aspects of games.

 

Auxiliary papers (short, competition, vision and demo papers). Deadline on 14th May 2023

Short papers (2-4 pages): describe work in progress, smaller projects that are not yet ready to be published as a full paper, or new progress on projects that have been reported elsewhere. Competition papers (8 pages) describe research related to one of the competitions in the Games community, including the design of new competitions and in particular submissions to existing competitions. Vision papers (8 pages) describe a vision for the future of the Games field or some part of it, are based on extensive research and include a comprehensive bibliography. The standards for vision papers are high. Literature reviews and opinion papers with speculations not grounded in research are immediately rejected. Demo papers (2 pages) describe work in progress and will be presented during a demo session. All page limits include references and appendices.

Auxiliary papers (short, competition, vision and demo papers) will be reviewed and accepted ones will be included in the proceedings.

 

Games Industry Presentation. Deadline on 11th June 2023

We welcome presentation proposals from the games industry that wish to present their work on the areas covered in this conference, such as games technology and applications of Artificial Intelligence to games. We are interested in presentations about research prototypes, commercial products, indie/mobile/AAA games, AR/VR applications, etc., as well as participation on poster sessions and discussion panels. These talk proposals do not require the submission of a written manuscript to be accepted at the conference. 

 

Journal Paper Presentation. Deadline on 11th June 2023

Authors of recent relevant journal papers (for example, published in journals such as IEEE Transactions on Games) are invited to submit a statement of intent to present their work at the conference (specifying their preference for Oral or Poster presentation). Since the work will have already been peer reviewed to a high standard, these papers will be accepted for presentation at the conference subject to a light-touch check for recency and relevance. (Note that the paper itself will not be republished.)

Authors can submit their intent to present through CoG2023’s paper submission system. The paper title, complete author list, publication information (as Abstract text), keywords, journal paper PDF file, and preference for ORAL/POSTER presentation should be provided when submitting. The paper will be evaluated to determine if it is suitable to be presented at CoG2023.

 

Academic Presentation. Deadline on 11th June 2023

This edition of IEEE CoG welcomes extended abstract submissions by researchers and practitioners to present their research findings. The extended abstract submission is intended to accommodate researchers who want to participate and share their findings at CoG but come from disciplines that traditionally do not publish their work in conference proceedings. Works submitted in this format will not be included in the conference proceedings.

Authors can submit their intent to present through CoG2023’s paper submission system. The presentation title, authors, short abstract, keywords, extended abstract PDF file (between 750 and 1500 words including references), and preference for ORAL/POSTER presentation should be provided when submitting. The extended abstract will be evaluated to determine if it is suitable to be presented at CoG2023 but will not be included in the conference proceedings.

 

SUBMISSIONS

Submission site: To be opened. The CMT system will be used.

 

All submitted papers will be fully peer-reviewed, and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings and on IEEE Xplore. Short papers will be allocated poster presentations and short oral presentations if time and space permits; vision papers will be allocated regular oral presentation slots; competition papers will be allocated short or regular oral presentations. Reviewing standards for competition papers are as high as for regular CoG papers, and standards for vision papers are higher.
