Good morning,

The Atlantic Coastal Island Project team is hiring a Geospatial Analyst (full time) and a Geospatial Programmer (part time), with a target start date of Oct 1, 2023. This opportunity allows for the position to be held by either one highly qualified individual or two individuals with complementary skill sets. The successful candidate(s) will play a crucial role in the development of a geospatial database that will be used to support protected areas planning and wildlife conservation and in improving and expanding upon existing geospatial procedures. The position will be hosted by at Acadia University, but the successful candidate(s) can work remotely.

I would appreciate it if you would help distribute this opportunity to potential candidates!

I am grateful to acknowledge the Wolastogiyik/Maliseet People on whose traditional territory I write today.
The Wolastoqiyik/Maliseet and their indigenous neighbours, the Mi'Kmaq/Mi'kmaw and Passamaquoddy/Peskotomuhkati, signed Peace and Friendship Treaties with the British Crown in the 1700s that protected their rights to lands and resources. In the spirit of gratitude, I am committed to continual learning and unlearning around the legacy of colonialism and amplifying Indigenous voices.

Geospatial Analyst and/or Geospatial Programmer

Project Background

Coastal islands are known for their intactness, diversity of habitats, and significant biological and geological features. Despite their value, biophysical and anthropogenic information at the island scale is missing throughout much of Atlantic Canada. To address this gap, we are developing an Atlantic Coastal Island (ACI) Database to house biophysical and anthropogenic geospatial data on islands in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, PEI, New Brunswick, and eastern Quebec. This will support the ability of government departments and conservation organizations to make evidence-based decisions about the acquisition and protection of coastal islands, the valuation of those ecosystem functions and services, and the conservation of species that rely upon island habitats.

Position Description

We are hiring a Geospatial Programmer and/or a Geospatial Analyst to join the Atlantic Coastal Island Project team. This opportunity allows for the position to be held by either one highly qualified individual or two individuals with complementary skill sets. The successful candidate(s) will play a crucial role in improving and expanding upon existing geospatial procedures and contribute to developing a product that will be used to support both protected areas planning and environmental management.

The successful candidate(s) will work with a collaborative team of researchers and stakeholders but should be able to demonstrate a history of successful project management and self-management skills, as they will be working remotely. The targeted start date is October 1, 2023. The end date is March 31, 2024, with the possibility of renewal pending the success of grant applications. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.

Geospatial Analyst (full-time)

·         Lead the development of a geospatial database by collating and managing large datasets related to coastal islands.

·         Derive physical, ecological, and anthropogenic attributes from the coastal island layer using geospatial analysis techniques.

·        Collaborate with other team members to ensure accurate and comprehensive attribute derivation.

·         Contribute to the ongoing enhancement and refinement of the geospatial database.

Geospatial Programmer (part-time, flexible)

·        Enhance an existing Python automated procedure used to delineate coastal island boundaries in Atlantic Canada.

·        Utilise Python libraries and tools to access Sentinel-2 imagery via Google Earth Engine.

·        Collaborate with the team to identify areas of improvement in the existing script.

·        Implement improvements, potentially including the integration of additional packages or toolkits.
