As an introduction, Shiny Pokmon can be met anywhere in the wild (or from eggs). Known methods from the original games such as Mesuda and chain fishing are NOT implemented in PokeMMO, and thus you will have to settle with the set shiny rate in PokeMMO.
The Old man breeder will tell you one of your Pokmon seem special and that you should hold onto it IF you try to breed a shiny with a non-shiny Pokmon. This is implemented as it wouldn't be balanced if people would try to get a rare shiny such as Charmander by breeding that with a common shiny from the same egg group. It could potentially cause an inflation and ruin the market. Thus, it is ONLY possible to breed a Shiny Pokmon with a Shiny Pokmon in PokeMMO - If both parents are Shiny, the child will now always be Shiny (and hatch as the same species as the female parent).
The system doesn't track your encounters. This means that even if you are at your FIRST encounter or your 123456th encounter, the chance is still either 1/30000, 1/27000 etc. If you want your shiny, you have to be dedicated and patient. Whenever a shiny Pokmon appears it will appear with its alternative color, a sparkle and with "Shiny" in front of its name:
- What is a Secret Shiny?
A Secret Shiny is a rare shiny particle variant. Secret Shinies appear the same as normal shinies but with a different particle effect. This particle effect replaces the normal shiny particle; you can't have a pokemon with both the Secret and normal Shiny particle.
- How do I get a Secret Shiny?
Secret Shinies only appear in single encounters or naturally-occurring hordes (not in hordes summoned by Sweet Scent and not via breeding). When you encounter a shiny pokemon, there is a 1/16 chance that it is a Secret Shiny instead of a normal shiny.
- What happens if I breed a Secret Shiny?
You can breed Secret Shinies with normal Shinies and the Secret Shiny particle will be passed on to the baby. Remember though that you cannot have both the normal and Secret Shiny particle on the same pokemon.
This is based on the fact that you get many more encounters per hour compared to a method like single encounter hunting. If you are dedicated, have your Sweet Scent (move) and Leppa berries hotkey'ed (), then I am certain a hunter can get approximately 900-1000 encounters (180-200 5x hordes) an hour, as 1 Leppa Berry equals encountering two hordes (which equals to 10 encounters in 5x Pokmon hordes).
People use this method when they are hunting rare Pokmon that you cannot find via hordes; for example, Starter Pokmon, Pseudo-legendary Pokmon or other rares (for example [Rotom] and [Lapras]). The only disadvantage about this method is the fact that you risk encountering a common Shiny Pokmon in the progress if this Pokmon shares the spot with your target.
Fossil hunting: This one can also be seen as a single encounter hunt. You basically farm fossils (could be in addition to egg hatching or not) and you bring them to life. The chance of getting a shiny is the same rate as in single encounters. You can farm the fossils from Rock Smash by using Thief (or other methods) on encountered rock Pokmon. You get the particular fossils in the respective regions they were discovered:
Egg hatching is the go-to method if you want to hunt rare Starter Pokmon, Fossil Pokmon or other rares without risking the possibility of encountering a common Shiny Pokmon in the progress of your hunt:
Here, you are completely focusing on the Pokmon(s) you are hunting. It is a money consuming method as you have to continuously buy breeders (mainly Ditto(s)) in order to keep your egg hatching train running. You can reduce the cost a bit by using male breeders from the same egg group (as your target) whenever your egg hatched as a female. In fact, there are different ways to shiny hunt by egg hatching:
Yes, if you breed your target male OT with a non-OT Ditto, your shiny will hatch with your OT. In addition, if your target is female and have your OT, and you breed it with a male or a Ditto, the hatch will also have your OT.
It can the best investment of your life or you will spend MILLIONS. In average, a Ditto cost 3000 a piece (180k per box) and if we round this up to 30000 eggs (the shiny rate), it will cost you 90,000,000 Pokyen - and it is not even a guarantee that you hatch the egg. You also gotta consider expense of the Pok Ball(s) as 30000 eggs equal an expense of 6,000,000 Pokyen.
You can do that by also using male breeders from the same egg group as your target (you can of course not do this if you go for genderless targets). In fact, if you go for a starter Pokmon, you will (statistically) get female hatches in 1/8 of the time, meaning you would "only" spend approximately 82,285,714 Pokyen instead of 90,000,000 when you have hatched 30000 eggs:
When hatching eggs, I suggest my own method where you buy 1,000 Pok Ball(s) per cycle. That way, I was able to keep track of my hatched egg amount, which was 26,502 eggs before it decided to shine. I was only able to do this by counting the Pok Balls I used.
"Can I breed my shiny hatch into a comp?"
Yes, definitely. In fact, it is easier (of course not cheaper) to breed shiny comps than regular breeds as the shiny child's IV inheritance behaves differently:
4 random IVs are passed directly from the parents to the child. Of these 4, 2 will always be the highest possible value and 2 may be chosen by Braces.
Remaining 2 IVs are averaged.
Extra tip to your egg hunt: Donator status and Flame Body/Magma Armor ability (Slugma, Volcarona, Magmar etc.) are very important for this hunt as you will hatch many more eggs per hour compared in comparison to not including these during your hunt. In addition, I highly recommend that egg hatching takes place in Unova (!!!) as you will get more eggs done per day due to the shorter distance between PC and the Old man breeder.

I am sharing this, as I believe that knowing your encounter amount is what is the most important motivational factor when shiny hunting.
