- Updating the firmware will delete some data from your Brother machine such as secured print data, caller ID log, journal report, outgoing message, and more (features depend on your model machine). We recommend that you read the installation notes on the download page before running the firmware update tool.

e. Select your language and click Continue.

f. Select the way your machine is connected to the Internet (Connect Directly is most common) and click Continue. Go to step 5.

a. Make sure that your computer is connected to your network.

b. Make sure your anti-virus software and firewall software are temporarily disabled.

c. If your machine is connected using a network connection, and steps a and b don't resolve the issue, switch your machine to a USB connection and try the update again.

d. Macintosh users - You may need to use a different version of Java. Click here for instructions.

a. Make sure that the Brother machine is turned on and do one of the following:

- USB users - Make sure the USB cable is directly connected to your machine and your computer.

The firmware cannot be updated if you're printing using printer sharing and the Brother machine is connected to a different computer.

- Wired Network users (for supported models) - Make sure the network cable is connected to the machine and the router.

- Wireless Network users (for supported models) - Make sure that your computer is connected to the same wireless network as the machine.

b. You may need to temporarily disable the anti-virus software and firewall software.

Your machine's default password may be one of the following based on manufacture date:

- initpass
- access
- Some machines will have it listed on the back next to "PWD".

Not all machines will have a password label. Try one of the other possible default passwords.

If you've created a custom password for your Brother machine's settings, and you've forgotten the password, you'll need to reset the network card to factory default to regain access to these settings. We cannot help you recover a lost password.

Okay, I was successful using the Brother printer setup software, but instead of selecting the option to set up via wireless network connection, I had to connect my computer to the printer via USB cable. After setting it up that way, I was able to remove the USB cable, and now the printer is visible.

I was able to get my Brother printer printing and connected to my iOS devices without a call to Brother. If your Brother is similar to my HL-L2360 with a small display and a few buttons, then don't punish yourself by trying to connect to WiFi using that insanely horrible interface. Find and download their Wireless Device Setup Wizard (I have a Mac, I don't know if there is similar Windows software). Search for brother printer setup wizard download.

1) I reset the network on my Brother printer. I don't know if this is necessary or not. To do this you need to find the steps for the buttons to push. Don't try to figure it out with the keypad. You will get stuck printing test pages and trying to connect to WiFi. I did say it's an insanely horrible interface, didn't I!

2) I booted the Wireless Device Setup Wizard on my Mac. I connected the printer to my Mac with a USB printer cable. Then I followed the steps in the wizard and completed the setup, but when I disconnected the USB cable the wireless connection to my printer failed. I tried to "Add a printer" in the Mac System Preferences, but my Mac saw no printer.

4) Before my planned call to Brother this morning I figured I would try again. Low and behold my Brother appeared in the available printer list as a Bonjour printer and I could add it. Now it prints wirelessly from my Mac.

I factory reset my gateway today hoping it would fix my three times a day dropped internet connection. Things got much worse since doing the firmware update 1609. No improvement there, but my Brother does connect wireless now.

I was also able to connect to my personal router wireless. However, I am not using Bridge Mode, I have it in router mode (I need a W-Fi network with parental controls for my kids). The problem with this is that I need to also point my computer to this Wi-Fi in order to print, but I prefer to stay on the T-Mobile Wi-Fi.

Brother printer mfc-f4510dw, DLink ...-655' assorted apple i products. All I stuff connected to network. Printer connected to network, prints from win-7 dell laptop. When using brother iscan/iprint the printer can be found an I can scan or print. All other apps can't find the printer. Back ground. Everything worked for years but the DLink quit so I replaces it with the same model used the same pass code but.

Man, I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I did the exact same thing, except used my IP address. I click on the "Check for new firmware" button and eventually it errors out and says there was a problem updating the firmware, turn the device off and on. I have, several times.)

I went to Brother's website and downloaded the firmware update. After a lengthy process trying to get it unzipped and installed, OSX stated that I needed a Java JDK. I went to the Java website and it's a 250mb file. What the heck?!?! I don't want to download a dev kit just so I can install a stupid printer firmware update. What is going on with Brother printers? This is unbelievable.

I had similar problems, but with the Brother HL-L2360DW. I connected it directly to my network with no problem. AirPrint worked *only* after I rebooted the printer, and even then, only the first time I tried printing from any mobile device (iPhone 6 plus, 6s or iPad Mini). Tried removing the network and reconnecting, no luck. Tried updating drivers, no luck.

Finally tried updating the firmware via Brother's firmware updater. This did the trick. Is now working perfectly from all devices, regardless of the printer's ready/sleep/deep sleep state. I didn't need to download the Java JDK, probably because I already need it for Photoshop (thanks, Adobe!).

Worked well; printed from iMac wirelessly immediately after setup, but once some time passed and printer went to "Deep Sleep" mode, when trying to print, iMac would say "Printer offline" or "Printer not connected to network". Tried updating firmware, re-installing printer on wireless network, checked all System Preferences/Printers on iMac. Nothing worked. Could not print from desktop via wireless network. Wife using Windows desktop could print perfectly every time using same home wireless network.

Called Brother support and spent 45 minutes on phone with them. They uninstalled and re-installed printer on network (which I had done at least twice previously). Was able to print test page after that, but did not fix "Deep Sleep" problem.

Let printer go to "Deep Sleep" and then tried to print; IT WORKS!! ...so far, I should add. I have learned not to get too excited when it comes to IT/computer issues; may stop working tonight, but so far, grateful for this fix after no help at all from Brother support.

Can't believe Brother can't work with Apple to make printer work with Apple devices. Brother support person said he was not allowed to give advice on Mac settings or troubleshoot interface between Mac computer and Brother printer. He could only give advice on Brother printer and print test page, etc. to confirm printer could print. Disappointed in Brother and their support, but happy to have a printer I can now use.

I agree. I bought a Brother DCP-L2540DW and immediately encountered the problem using AirPrint that so many others have documented. The solution was updating Brother's driver and enabling IPv6. I used my browser and the printer's IP address to access the unit's configuration utility. The firmware update option (ver. K to ver. L for the DCP-L2540DW) is found in the left column of the Administrator tab and the IPv6 option is in the left column of the Network/Wired tab.

I also had trouble connecting the DCP-L2540DW to an ASUS laptop over WiFi. Brother's NetworkRepairTool resolved the issue by assigned a static IP address to the unit. I did the same when I installed the DCP-L2540DW with AirPrint on my MacBook Air. Of course, this didn't keep the Brother from going offline.

Well. what works for me when i face the problem is that i open an iBooks document and select print, then i cancel the request and now i can AirPrint from all other applications, so it might be an Apple problem afterall.

Thank You!! This seems to work for me. I have been trying to fix my printing problems. I have a Brother DCP-L2540DW printer and have been issues trying to print from my MacBook and iPhone after the printer went into sleep mode. This has seemed to resolve the issue.

I was able to access this screen through the Brother app for my printer (installed on my iMac when installing the printer). From there I clicked on the settings gear, and then clicked the "show printer webpage..." button on the popup. From there, select the Network tab at the top > wireless section/button at the top > IPv6 (Wireless) on the left-hand side.

Thanks as well. I have had this Brother MFC-J4620DW printer for over a year now, and I have never been able to use it from any Apple device (MacBook, iPhone, iPad). Only windows machines were able to print. Today I decided to seriously look into it. I came across your post.
