An example of such is its Surface Book, first released in October 2015. The laptop-tablet hybrid was not necessarily a new idea, as other companies have tried in the past, but the execution was an attempt to combine high performance and a unique design to create something that professionals and creatives would use daily.
The original Surface Book was largely praised by users and critics alike, though they still found some tweaks that could be made and hardware limitations. So now, a year later, Microsoft has listened to the feedback and made improvements to the device that will be welcomed additions by professionals for round two.
Also standard is a dedicated graphics card, namely the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M with 2GB GDDR5 of memory. This is twice the power as the original Surface Book, meaning more intensive programs such as video editing, photo editing and even gaming will run smoother or take less time to render.
Otherwise, the rest of the changes are subtle design tweaks. The unit is thicker just ever so slightly plus a little heavier, which Microsoft says is to accommodate the bigger battery. The keyboard is also angled down slightly for a better typing experience, the hinge gap when closed has shrunk to help keep unwanted bits out and the Pen is harder to lose with a magnet that sticks on the side.
Hold a button at the top of the keyboard and you can then detach the screen to turn it into a tablet. However, because the dedicated graphics card and extra beefy battery are in the base of the device, the tablet on its own will be a bit more limited in what it can do.
Then there is the professional third party software. AutoCAD, Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop other programs work natively for a touch screen experience and the added performance boost helps make things more seamless. It would be nice to see more companies make a touch-optimized version of their software, but since this is the full version of Windows 10 it can still run any program like a regular PC only with the added ability of a touch screen.
But one thing to consider here is the soon-to-be-released Windows 10 Creators Update, which has some pretty fun and innovative features that will work especially nice on the Surface Book such as 3D Paint or other augmented reality tools.
