This Binary Universe is the fifth studio album by the composer and electronica artist BT. It was released on August 29, 2006. The album was a significant about-face for Transeau, largely abandoning the progressive trance music he was known for, in favor of ambient soundscapes, live orchestration and glitch music. It is the first BT album not to be released on vinyl, nor feature any singles (though an edit of "1.618" was featured on a compilation). The album was also composed specifically for DTS 5.1 surround sound. A film version of the album received a limited theatrical run, usually accompanied by appearances by Transeau himself. The album is dedicated to Transeau's daughter, Kaia. The album's artwork makes nods to binary by spelling BT's name in morse code on the cover, as well as using additional morse code on the DVD menus.
The whole album has an other wordly feel to it and just sounds extremely trippy/dreamlike from start to finish. I've also never heard anything even close to this type of sound/vibe before still over 10 years after it was made. What methods did BT do to create this album?
As is almost tradition at this point, I came into this piece without knowing much of anything about BT. I knew that he was an electronic artist, and that our PR wizard and resident music guru Inter was head over heels for this album. Thankfully, that was sufficient to pique my interest enough to sign up for this. I had no idea what to expect, and dove in head first with no real idea of what to expect.
This is This Binary Universe. It is hard to contain with words. Each track deserves the massage length it bears, as each individual song on this album is a breath of fresh air in your lungs. No two songs sound the same, but they evoke the same strong feelings. It is a connection to your subconscious in the early morning hours when you lie somewhere between sleep and waking that makes life feel less real. The songs are as vibrant as they are reserved, with incredibly deft movements from one soundscape to the next.
Milo Wolff - Abstract / Summary: The Wave Structure of Matter.
This perspective of the universe uses the knowledge that particles communicate. Communication is expressed by the force laws. The communicating matter includes the electron, the proton, and other charged particles. Each such particle is composed of two spherical quantum waves, one outward and one inward. Traveling in opposite directions, the two waves are mirror images of each other. These waves are the mechanism of communication.
Geoff Haselhurst - Milo, I think this probably needs more spatial description. My logic; Something obviously exists. If you look about you, you see/sense a three dimensional (same as spherical) space around you. Your senses are correct.
It is this space which exists as a wave medium. (Imagine space as a substance like diamond, that what exists around us is this rigid substance/space which allows waves to flow through it. But like air, we can't see it, we just see the effects of the Spherical Waves (Matter) flowing through it.
We explain the particle wave duality with the logic that a spherical wave (like the surface of a ball) flowing IN and OUT through its own Wave Centre will create a spherically concentric point particle effect in space. This point like effect at the Wave Center is what we observe as matter. (Specifically the electron.)
Milo Wolff - There are only three Principles underlying the Quantum Wave Structure of Matter:
1) The Wave Equation;
2) The mass-energy density Principle;
3) The Minimum Amplitude Principle. (MAP)
These three principles are the paint on the palette which Nature uses to conceive, design, and build the material universe.
This will cause a change in shape of each roughly spherical wave system (in an ellipsoidal way) and result in the IN waves meeting in a new position (acceleration of the 'particle'). This is why acceleration is a change in velocity and is related to Einstein's spherical/ellipsoidal geometry for matter and gravity. (The curvature of four dimensional Minkowski space - which is an abstract mathematical truth only.)
Further, this effect occurs mainly at each respective wave center, where the energy density/wave amplitude is very high. Which is why we only see the wave centers.
Milo Wolff - BINARY COMMUNICATION
Those of us who are intimately involved with computers and communication are often humbled when we realize that all the wonders of computer technology, the exciting color images on our monitors, the lightning-speed messages, the world wide spread of information via the web, and even love affairs which begin on the internet, are simply a stream of binary numbers - just an electronic dit-dah, dit-dit, dit-dah, dit dit.... zeros and ones ...nothing more!
Geoff Haselhurst - The love affairs makes me smile. (You and I are very alike Milo!) But this is profound, as it is the concept that simple systems can evolve fantastically complex things. We must relate this to ourselves, as humans are surely one of the most amazing, complexly evolved structures of these Spherical IN OUT Wave Systems and their resultant Wave Centers.
Milo Wolff - The remarkable properties of mathematics makes it possible to transmit complicated messages, videos, sounds, and emotions. Using binary numbers 0 and 1 to equivalent familiar decimal numbers, it is easier to understand how a stream of familiar numbers can create sounds and paint images on a screen. Nevertheless, the contrast between the binary stream and the final display is awe-inspiring. We are amazed by this remarkable capability of mathematics.
Geoff Haselhurst - I would turn this around and say the remarkable properties of Space and its Wave motions this. (All logic including Maths is a result of the logical behaviour of waves in Space, due to the properties of Space. Further, we can count both number of wavelengths and wave-centers and this is the ultimate foundation of mathematics. I should also add that a fundamental problem for mathematics is that One can be both finite and discrete (one apple, human) or infinite and continuous (one Space), so we must be careful how we use One (and this then affects Infinity as 1/0. and the foundations of Calculus).
I have come to realise that ultimately Truth and thus Mathematics requires necessary connection, which requires ONE thing that is common to the many things. Thus Space and its Properties (wave-motions) explain this One thing that gives rise to Truth. (I now think logic can be generally defined as the necessary consequence of the language we are using (defined by Principles), and when correctly applied then it is true. e.g. if I define 1+1=2 and 1+1+1 =3 then it must also be true that 1+2=3, or in words, if I am older than Roger, and you are older than me, then you must also be older than Roger. This is a necessary consequence of our language.)
What we are now doing is creating a NEW language to describe reality based upon Spherical Waves flowing IN and OUT through their respective Wave Centers.
Then we can show step by step how this quite simple language leads to a sensible, logical, true description of Nature, of our world, and how we exist in, and sense this world. (It is not our opinion, we are but humble servants of TRUTH!)
Milo Wolff - BINARY MATTER
Nature is also binary in its physical structure of matter and energy. Knowing the properties of mathematical binaries, and knowing that inward/outward waves are the structure of particles, we realize that Nature (and the Universe) has evolved from binary elements.
This is equally awesome and humbling. Complicated messages, videos, sounds, and emotions are combinations of the inward and outward quantum waves which constitute the charged particles of matter. These two quantum waves are all that is necessary to construct protons and electrons, atoms that become molecules, which, in turn, compose the solid, liquid and gaseous matter of the universe.
Milo Wolff - It is this special property of resonance that leads to the atomic table of elements and the vast numbers of molecules which can be formed from them. Like the stream of binary numbers, the electronic dit-dah, dit-dit, dit-dah, dit-dit, the binary pair of waves provides endless combinations to form different kinds of matter.
Perhaps a more elegant and inspiring analogy is the comparison of Nature's quantum waves with musical notes. Music is also structured of simple waves which can be combined and resonated in a myriad of ways by a composer and an orchestra to produce vast numbers of melodies and compositions.
Geoff Haselhurst - Well said, we must use this analogy, and that humans need to live more harmoniously, that we are but a small part of the greatest orchestra that is Nature and the Cosmos. The harmony of the Spheres in a musical universe!
Milo Wolff - It is not difficult to observe the binary universe in action. We see the binary universe when we observe that there are only two kinds of electrical charge, that all particles have an anti-particle, and that particle spin is either clockwise or counter-clockwise.
Geoff Haselhurst - Also, you wrote in your book that a sine wave is the result of a balance between two forces, and this fact underlies everything. To me these forces must be caused by the Motion of Space and the Elasticity of Space.
(Eastern Mysticism, particularly Buddhism, also has this foundation of balance - harmony - yin yang, and the inter-connectedness of all things which are transient / perpetually changing.)
