Gary Awdey

It is with sadness that I recently learned from a note from the Michigan Cider Association that Gary Awdey had left us. 

A number of us on this forum knew him (Andrew I am thinking of you). He played an important role in my early cider making years: I remember we splitted a motel room the first time I went to CiderDays (a good 25 years ago) and he introduced me to many people there. He is also the one who made me make my first keeves, as he had found a source for the PME enzyme. 

Gary was one of the founders and strong promoter of the GLINTCAP cider competition (in those early days it was called GLOWS).

So sorry to hear this. I know Gary from  the early days. Always generous with his time and knowledge. RIP Gary.

Gary worked long and hard to promote the US craft cider scene. I met Gary at the first US cider competition sponsored by the Northwest Cider Society in 2002; the other judges were Dick Dunn and Peter Mitchell. The NW Cider Society did not have the horsepower and the completion with Gary at the helm was picked by the Michigan Association. He also was instrumental in writing the guidelines of Cider classification among the many other contributions he made.  I am sorry to hear of is passing, he was there at the beginning and eager to help.

Yes Claude I was so very sad to hear the news about Gary, whom I first met at Cider Days in Mass in 2005 (at the same time as my first meeting with you! ).  We had arranged in advance to do a joint presentation on keeving in the Old Meeting House, not having met before the event and all planned online which was novel in those days! It seemed to go off pretty well and I found Gary so very well-informed and consistently full of interesting ideas around the peculiarities of cider chemistry.!

In those days he was in upstate New York, later moving to the midwest for work, where he ran his tasting sessions for GLINTCAP. I met him at least twice in the US and once in the UK when he visited our West Country cider makers along with Dick and Diane Dunn.  It’s all a long time ago now.  RIP Gary. I’m glad to have known you.
