I'm in Bath and have made cider in previous years from other people's surplus apples. Despite having built up quite a good network, I am effectively apple-less this year due to the poor crop. I made 34 gallons last year and only want to make a similar quantity this year, so I'm not after industrial quantities. Where can I buy apples in bulk and what is the going rate likely to be? Just been quoted £1.20 per kilo for some PYO. Seems a bit steep. Willing to pay, but also open to the idea of submitting to the natural course of events and taking a year off!
Thanks
John

Check the archives for a posting on this list by Rupert Best (Dorset) on
10th August, offering PYO cider apples. They may all be spoken for by
now, of course ;-)

Hi John, it seems many of us smaller scale enthusiasts are in a similar situation, scratching around for what we can find. How about approaching
One of the larger outfits near to you and buying a few 1bs from them, or asking them if they have trees on their round which they won't be getting to.
PYO may be around £30 per ton, or closer to £100 if the work's done for you. Good luck, and thanks for "liking" NGTC on Facebook!

I have doubts as to whether you will get such good prices for apples this
year, although I would personally advocate offering more in any case as I
don't think even £100 per ton is a very fair price for the growers...

All the best

Maybe it's my maths, but £1.20 per kilo sounds like £1200 per ton to me, which is why I thought it sounded steep, especially for PYO.
Thanks to everyone for comments.

John,

You may be better asking for a 'bulk buy' price, or offering to collect windfalls, or to strip the trees when everyone else has got bored of PYO. The latter works very well for us, but means you don't really get started until later in October.

Ray.

Sorry John – I was referring to Seans £30 - £100 per ton rather than your £1200 per ton. I would certainly not pay less than £100 and, if they do the work for you then I would want to up this more…

£1.20 per kilo sounds like supermarket or farm shop prices to me as opposed to the cost of either juicing apples or even windfalls (which a grower wouldn’t be able to retail).

John, I know some groups round Bath who have fruit and I could spare a bit to keep you going/may know of a few trees unpicked (but un-sighted this year, so no garuntee) in this area.
Message me off stream or get my number off my website and call.
