Anyone know where I could get some Yarlington Mill scion wood for spring 2019?

Thanks,

Christina.

Check with Summerland Varieties, in Summerland BC. They may be able to ship to you.

Thanks for the link Chris. Unfortunately they have a $100 minimum charge, plus tax and handling fees. I am just looking for a dozen or so sticks of scion wood. I was hoping for something less expensive! I am just a hobbyist.

Anyone out there have some in their orchard who would be willing to send me some? If you are in New Brunswick, I could pick it up in person.

Cheers,

Christina.

Hi Christina,

If you can import from US into Canada, you might try Fedco in Maine
(https://www.fedcoseeds.com/trees/?item=932).

Beware that a lot of the Yarlington mills in the US is actually Yellow Redstreak, a rather worthless early bitter sharp. Very similar tree habit but none of the Yarlie magic.

Hi Christina,

Where in NB are you? I am located in Fredericton.. Have you tried Cornhill Nursery just outside of Sussex? Bob Osborne would be the one to talk to. osb...@cornhillnursery.com

Wes - do you happen to have any photos of the yellow redstreak YM imposter? Would love to be able to identify (and avoid) it.

If you haven't seen it yet, you may have a look at this page from my web site:

As of Corn Hill Nursery, I have sent wood to Bob Osborne a few years ago. I don't know if he yet has been able to multiply it enough to be able to offer it.

For my part, the variety didn't have much growth this summer...

The Faux Yarlie Yellow Redstreaks came out of NY.

Biggest diff is harvest date.   YR harvested 1 month ago mostly from the ground because YR drops like crazy.   Still haven’t harvested YM but will this week.  I’m pretty sure I have some real YM.  (Ironically my YMs were labelled Muscat de Dieppe due to a planting crew mistake.  Pretty sure they aren’t MDD)

Pics:
Yellow Redstreak -

Fatter leaves with YR.  YM leaves more pointy.

YR left YM right (YR was missed at harvest - when they were harvested 1 month ago they had more yellow field and less vivid red)

More of a jersey shape with YM

We do have some at Cornhill - not sure how much we grafted but I think only 1-2 year. Did Summerland say they can ship scion to NB?

I've got some in my orchard (near Sussex) but not fruiting yet - I'd give the nursery a call.

Good luck!

Good to know they are indeed at Cornhill Nursey, although not on the website yet / for sale. I will give Bob a call and see if he will part with some scion wood. Thanks everyone!

BTW, I just found a tannic apple growing in the woods near my house, which is exciting the heck out of me. Brix 11 / SG 1.045; pH 3.44; TA 0.60%. Nice looking apple, lots of red stripes over a yellow base, scab free. Juice is dark in colour, pleasantly bitter and a little astringent. I have named it Sixpenny Pippin. Looking forward to growing it in my orchard. Unfortunately new growth is very high up and impossible to access. Might have to try bud grafting.

Cheers,

Christina.

Just cut it down in January and you'll have access to the entire tree.

I kid.

Thanks for the offer, but I was able to find some in New Brunswick.

As mentioned by Claude and Crab & Winkle, Cornhill Nursery has some, but they don't have enough yet to advertise on their website. I called and asked very nicely, for just a couple of sticks, and Bob said okay.
