Hi All,

Up to this point I've been begging apples from neighbour's gardens, freecycle, gumtree etc.  I've had really good success with this but I can't help thinking it would be nice to have some control over the varieties I'm working with.

I'm now wondering how much a ton of good variety cider apples would cost typically (eg: Kingston Black, Dabinet, etc)?

Also, would it be cheaper if I can collect and pick from a commercial orchard?

I'm based in Dorset and would appreciate any advice :)

Regards,

Alasdair

This topic comes up fairly often. Go to
http://groups.google.com/group/cider-workshop?hl=en and enter <cost of
apples> or <price of apples> in the search box to see some previous
discussion. You are probably looking at around 100 per ton. But there
isn't really an open market in cider apples. The bigger growers with
well-managed named varieties of fruit are all directly contracted in
some way or another, if only to supply themselves. Your best bet may be
to identify a few medium scale cider companies in Dorset / Somerset and
get in touch with them to see if they are prepared to do a deal.
