Hi there,

I've been using the excellent cider record form the back of Bill Bradshaw's Cider Manual and have adapted it slightly for personal use.

I thought it might be positive to share it with people and to see if there's any other crucial information which would be beneficial to a new cider maker learning the craft.

In particular, I was thinking if temperature would be worth noting as part of the process, to determine any additives and general monitoring for fermentation?

Of course, feel free to download if it's of any use to you!

Thanks for sharing that - an interesting approach.

I use a very simple record sheet knocked up in XL that my EHOs were very happy with (so far anyway!).

It has just 8 columns: Date of pressing / Fruit / Container / SG / pH / SO2 / Pot ABV / Notes. The "Fruit" & "Notes" columns are the widest. Other information (start of ferment, etc) I write on the side of the containers in chalk as I go along.

In the same order of ideas, there is also the Excel spreadsheets I have written as companion material for The New Cider Maker's Handbook.
See for example the NoteBook: http://www.chelseagreen.com/notebook
And to the question of temperature, yes I do think it is useful to monitor it. And also the fermentation speed in FSU.

Well I’ll throw my fermentation log spreadsheet out there as well.   It maps to my process and logs the stuff that is important to me (and the TTB).

It is designed to be printed out and put in a three ring binder.   As a digital record it wouldn’t work well, though with judicious use of merge-cells it might work.   I used to log all the data onto my computer but I don’t have a computer in the cider house so I had a lot of problems with additions not getting logged.

Rite-in-the-rain paper is great for this sort of thing.

The “progress graph” on the top is designed to be marked as each step in the process is completed.   When you have many batches going, this is a good way to see what you should be watching for— just flip through the pages looking for action items.   When a batch is racked away to another batch or blend then I remove the sheet and put it in another section of the binder.

I a new sheet for blending and bottling drawdowns, though I really should make a sheet just for that as most of the fields aren’t necessary for a blend.

Excel Version

Google Sheets Version
(may require some tweaking to get it to print just right)
