Hi there,

Looking for a good recommendations for a basic transfer pump?

Have been using a winch for racking my 50/100l fermentors... but think its time to invest in a back before my back go's.

Any tips would be welcome.

Thanks so much,

johnny

Hi,

I myself am still looking for the “right’ pump and have found some technical articles but they are mostly in dutch.
Still this one might also shed some light on the different aspects to consider:

At those volumes you probably don’t need anything too fancy, unless you like spending money. I’d recommend the novax 20m. I imported mine when that was a cheaper and easy option but Vigo are a uk stockist. All the specs are on their website. They do a 30m if you want it to transfer faster.
The hoses and fittings are also at a reasonable price point for the 20m.

It’s served me very well from when I started in blue barrels to now using ibcs. It just takes longer to empty an ibc with it.

Cheers
Nick

I’ve used one of these for the past few years with no problems Rover Pompe Novax 20 m Wine Water Filling Electric Pump, Stainless Steel : Amazon.co.uk: Home & Kitchen

It does tend to suck the inlet pipe together so I now use reinforced Vigo hose 30mm (1+3/16") Ø x 1 metre spiral wire PVC hose - Vigo (vigoltd.com)

Seems to work well for me.  I use it for racking IBC’s.

Kindest Regards

Paul

You can purchase the pump for about half the Amazon cost, directly from Italy

     https://www.polsinelli.it/en/electric-pump-novax-20-m-P2029.htm

PVC hoses are quite stiff and have their own mind. I prefer silicon.

Not if you’re in post-Brexit Britain….

The most gentle type of pump for wine or cider is the peristaltic pump, but they are expensive. Of the rest, which would avoid the least loss of CO2 gas in the cider racking process? Any information would be appreciated.

@Nicholas Bradstock maybe not half price but you could get one into the UK for less than seventy quid from Polsinelli, by the time you take into account the price and VAT differentials and exchange rate.

Thank you all for your help.

Have ordered one from Polsinelli!

Here is hoping it arrives minus any extra Brexit costs! ha!

Will let you know how the racking goes.
