Hi. Just after some advice.

I am producing on a very small scale - approximately 2000 bottles - and need to print the batch number and or date on the bottle labels. I am bottling by hand and putting labels on by hand and need advice on a cheap way to print a batch number onto each label. I assume I have to have one for tracking purposes. I think my options are a hand stamp that incrementally increases in number (about £80) or a jet stamp which is much more sophisticated but costs nearer £900.

Appreciate any advice from other small producers.

Thanks

Mark

If you are just after a batch number, then a simple date of bottling
would do... All you need is for the bottle &/or batch to be traceable
just in case....? No expert but that's what I understand.
I have a cheap, adjustable self-inking indelible date stamp that I use
for BiBs and for the odd bottle I do - cost me about £8 inc delivery
IIRC...?

Hello Mark
You could buy a cheap second hand bar code printer and run the labels through it to add a batch number £30 upwards.
Or you could do the same but with thermal labels so that you don't need any ink.
Or you could run off little price labels with the batch number and put them on the back of the bottles.
All of these will work but it depends what suits your way of working.
Good luck

Thanks - very helpful. I hadn't thought of simply printing a small separate label to put on the back. I'm just designing my main bottle labels and was going to leave a space for the batch number but I guess I don't have to. Thanks :-)

You could pick up an old-school price label gun - the kind I remember from the local "happy shopper" shop the 80s. Avery will sell you one new via Amazon for £23 (Part number: PL 1/8)

You could also get one of those label guns that they use to price things in shops, and if you get one that can print 2 lines on the little labels, you can put a best before date and a batch number, and adjust it ad infinitum. Once you buy the gadget, the label rolls are really cheap.

Been looking into this a bit more.

Does anyone know if there are issues with using thermal printing for 'Best Before' and Lot No.? They apparently fade in UV light after a time. However most of the label printers available seem to be thermal unless you go for a plastic coated thermal transfer reels where the labels are permanent and resistant to most things.

Thanks again

Regards

Mark

Hello Mark
I have been using a thermal printer for overprinting BBE and Lot numbers for a few years now without any issues on chiller proof labels. No complaints of fading ever received.
Cheers
Guy
