So, here's a link to a video on the website of a company that makes the kind of machine I'm looking for--except it's marketed to olive and almond growers. http://www.arcusin.com/autopickmt.aspx Anyone know of a company that sells a device like this to cider apple growers?

I'm looking for the kind of shake/gather machine that one can mount on the front of a tractor then drive up to the tree--a big upside down umbrella wraps the tree and the shaking commences. This is the typical way to harvest olives and I saw a it used to harvest apples from semi-standard trees in Normandy. Can anyone point me toward a dealer that sells this kind of harvester for apples? I'm having no luck on the web.

Presumably you've already talked to companies like SFM
http://www.fruitharvesting.com/appleharvesters.php and Tuthill
http://www.tuthilltemperley.com/ who market the shake and sweep systems
which are widely used for cider apples in the UK? Or to Pattenden who
also have a shake and catch system (into a trailer, not an umbrella) see
http://www.pattendenmachinery.co.uk/shakecatch.pdf

Yes, I've looked at what those companies offer--though I haven't explored the manufacturer that Pattenden works with, Somaref. Harvesting apples from the ground isn't ideal in our situation and the shake and catch machine of Pattenden is probably too much machine for us.
