Nick Botner has an impressive collection.
I found a pdf file of his collection here:

http://www.slant.com/orchard/Botner-2010.PDF

A few fruit names are cut off at the bottom of the pages...

There has been a discussion about Nick recently in the NAFEX
discussion list. It appears Nick is selling his property, as he is
getting too old to take care of it.
See:

There are some organisations that want to save this collection - will
they be able to work together and raise the required amound of
money??? The price tag is stiff for an individual.

This is unfortunate but not surprising--he's in his mid-80's.

I've been getting scions from him for 7 years now. As far as I can tell,
they've been accurate. It would be a disaster to lose the collection, or
to have the identification system get scrambled up in any way. (I don't
know how he keeps track of what he's got...it's hard to imagine 4000
varieties of apple in a single private collection!)

He does have a lot of cider cultivars. It's been of inestimable value
to me here since there is basically no information on what cider sorts
will do well in our climate/soil. So I just try a handful every year.

Yes, but the incentive is tremendous. Claude, do you know if there's any
possible government involvement to save it?

Edit to my prior message; it appears Wagon Wheel Orchard is selling
benchgrafts, not scion sticks, from Nick's Orchard.

Hi all,

I checked on my 2012 scion order from Nick today after hearing that this
year may be the last. I have been aggressively collecting English, French,
and American hard cider apple scions over the past few years. Now with the
news that he is selling the farm, I am going to put in another order that
may be my last one.

If any of you are interested in saving any special cultivars from his
catalog, and it is a hard cider apple (or Perry Pear), let me know. If I
don't already have it, I will order it. This Spring when I do my grafting, I
will work them into my grafting schedule. In two years or so, email me and
you can have some free scions when it is big enough to clip.

If I already have the variety that you need, (many right now are only a year
old) email me in a year or so and I will cut you some free scions in about a
year. U-pay postage though. sorry.

I have up towards 85 hard cider apple cultivars that will be coming into
clipping age in 1 to 2 years, I don't have a problem with adding more to
make them available to anyone.

I think that as long as we all can stay informed as to who has what variety,
we will have at least what we Cider-Heads need even if the new owner decides
to bulldoze and roto-till Nick Botner's collection into the ground inorder
to plant cabbage. I sure hope who ever purchases the land keeps the 4000
trees.

If not I have alot of his hard cider varieties.

Thx

Chris

I looked at Nick's list and it made my head swim. I want to preserve germplasm, but it seems like such a crap shoot (Dick alluded to that). I know nothing about most of the varieties, let alone which ones are rare and endangered. I have a large collection of old agricultural books including Apples of New York and other pomology volumes, but I don't find information that I need to make informed choices. I guess I could select varieties that are not in the National Germplasm Repository and hope that they will grow in Indiana.

The folks in Geneva NY are aware that Mr. Botner's place is for sale.
They are considering the replacement of lost varieties (at Geneva ).

I imagine that there's a lot of chatting going on...

The Home Orchard Society (http://www.homeorchardsociety.org/) in
Portland, OR is also well aware of Nick Botner's plans to sell his
property. They typically collect fruit from his orchard every fall
for their All About Fruit show and scions from Nick's place every
winter for their Fruit Propagation Fair.

Last winter they began an effort to reproduce Nick's collection and
have (I think) at least several hundered grafted trees, two of each
variety. It will be a several year project as they search for an
appropriate site, most likely 30-50 acres to save his collection.
Joanie Cooper is the HOS president and would be able to elaborate more
than I.

Hi all, here is my list of saved scions from Nick Botner's orchard. In a
year or two, cuttings from most of these should be available.

If anyone wants to make sure a certain cider variety or perry pear is
available for future cuttings, let me know within the next week and i will
put it on my final order to Nick, and you can have free cuttings in about
2-3 years.

Chris,
I see in Nick's list: Pink Lady Janson (Pink Princess)
This is a variety that was bred by Fred Janson and hasn't been
propagated much, it is quite rare. Fred Janson was one of the founders
of NAFEX and had a large collection orchard in Ontario. And,
unfortunately, after his death, the orchard was bulldozed...
Although this is not a cider apple, it surely is a variety worth
saving and using in cider. A late ripening apple with pink flesh and
rich flavor. It is from a cross of Pink Pearl x Reine de reinettes
(King of Pippins).
He originally named it Pink Lady, but when the Australians started
marketing their own Pink Lady, he renamed his variety Pink Princess.
If you are interested, I could send you the article in which he
explaned this.
I have it in my orchard - Fred sent scions to me just a few months
before his death, but unfortunately it doesn't perform well in my zone
4 climate and has no vigor - I might even loose it in the near future.
And I don't know anyone else who has it!

Hi Claude, thank you for the info, I will put that on my order list, and I
will put you down for the first cuttings.
Do you know which rootstock that it is on now? If you do, I will avoid that
type when I graft it this spring.

Possibly if you want scions of it, you could put it on a different rootstock
and have a more vigorous tree with better properties.

Thanks

Hello Chris,

What a wonderful list of cider cultivars you have. While the States
are quite large, it's a whole other story than many of the other
members of this mailer...I was wondering where exactly in the States
you (and your scion wood) are from.

Thanks,
Noah

Hi Mark, let me check on what i have this weekend and i will let you know. I do have a 180 hard cider varieties but mostly all freshly grafted. Some from a couple of years ago may have enough wood. Just pay for shipping and i will send you cuttings for free.
You know that the USDA germplasm repository  will also send you free cuttings. They have an online order form.

Best regards

Smith's Cider, Tydeman's Late Orange, Orleans Reinette, Freyberg, Kandil Sinap, and maybe, for my stepdad, The yellow transparent.

Hello Mark ,  I have over the years gotten quite a few apple varieties from Nick Botner , and it seems you have , as well .  Would you like to see if I have any in my collection that you would like to add to yours ?  And vice-versa ?   I was able to buy 180 scions from him this year - he said no one else bought from him - he was retired now .   Regards ,       Celine

Hi Jerry, (and list) do you have any varieties in mind? We have about 250 varieties and perry pears. It has been a heavy scion cutting year with most cutting going to the East Coast of the US. Numbers are a bit depleted but if you wanted singles, am sure i can find what you need.
