This is unfortunate but not surprising--he's in his mid-80's.
I've been getting scions from him for 7 years now. As far as I can tell,
they've been accurate. It would be a disaster to lose the collection, or
to have the identification system get scrambled up in any way. (I don't
know how he keeps track of what he's got...it's hard to imagine 4000
varieties of apple in a single private collection!)
He does have a lot of cider cultivars. It's been of inestimable value
to me here since there is basically no information on what cider sorts
will do well in our climate/soil. So I just try a handful every year.

Yes, but the incentive is tremendous. Claude, do you know if there's any
possible government involvement to save it?

I checked on my 2012 scion order from Nick today after hearing that this
year may be the last. I have been aggressively collecting English, French,
and American hard cider apple scions over the past few years. Now with the
news that he is selling the farm, I am going to put in another order that
may be my last one.
If any of you are interested in saving any special cultivars from his
catalog, and it is a hard cider apple (or Perry Pear), let me know. If I
don't already have it, I will order it. This Spring when I do my grafting, I
will work them into my grafting schedule. In two years or so, email me and
you can have some free scions when it is big enough to clip.
If I already have the variety that you need, (many right now are only a year
old) email me in a year or so and I will cut you some free scions in about a
year. U-pay postage though. sorry.
I have up towards 85 hard cider apple cultivars that will be coming into
clipping age in 1 to 2 years, I don't have a problem with adding more to
make them available to anyone.
I think that as long as we all can stay informed as to who has what variety,
we will have at least what we Cider-Heads need even if the new owner decides
to bulldoze and roto-till Nick Botner's collection into the ground inorder
to plant cabbage. I sure hope who ever purchases the land keeps the 4000
trees.
If not I have alot of his hard cider varieties.
Thx
Chris

If anyone wants to make sure a certain cider variety or perry pear is
available for future cuttings, let me know within the next week and i will
put it on my final order to Nick, and you can have free cuttings in about
2-3 years.
Possibly if you want scions of it, you could put it on a different rootstock
and have a more vigorous tree with better properties.
Thanks

Hi Chris,I'm a small time amateur cider grower maker (I'm a college teacher in TN). I did my first bench grafts this Spring and am excited to see my 25 little trees prospering (on G-41 Dwarf rootstock). I'm interested in trying chip or bud grafts this summer. ANy chance of buying some bud sticks off you later this summer? I'm interested in:Smith's Cider, Tydeman's Late Orange, Orleans Reinette, Freyberg, Kandil Sinap, and maybe, for my stepdad, The yellow transparent. Thanks,Mark
