Help....have a Voran P 100, maybe 20 years old at a guess, the 2 bed one. Long story short: had to change the seal under the ram  yesterday and since then it's only operating at (guessing now) 75% efficiency. The pressure dial is barely registering and when I looked closely at it there a small hole in the top with a threaded interior, as if something is supposed to screw into it. One of my young helpers tells me he thinks there might have been a plastic screw of some kind in there but isn't sure....Anybody have any idea what that might be and whether its affecting a) the lack of pressure and/or b) the lack of any information registering on the dial? Thanks as ever. Lewis

Hi Lewis

There should be a small hole in the top of the pressure gauge - when delivered, there is a little rubber nipple thing that you cut off.

If there was a problem with the new seal, you'd expect to see leaking hydraulic oil. Did you fill the piston cylinder right up with hydraulic oil before you put the piston back in?  Not many other things that could be wrong apart from the open/close valve and the pump mechanism

Possibly an airlock? I agree with Nick about oil level. Is there enough
hydraulic oil in the chamber? Did you lose much when you changed the
seal? Check the dipstick.

According to the Voran manual, this is how you replace the seal
(collar). Note step 8 to get the air out. I seem to remember that's what
I did because that's what the Vigo engineer told me.

1.) Move out the piston (1) over the collar (2)
2.) Pull out the piston (lifting table)
3.) Scoop out oil until the collar is free
4.) Remove old collar
5.) Insert new collar with the groove downwards
6.) Place piston back again
7.) Lower piston
8.) Ventilate (move out piston until oil comes out)

Also, they say "Functional faults are mostly the result of air in the
hydraulic system. The pump must then be ventilated
with the motor running (the lower screw on the distributor head internal
hexagonal SK8 must be
loosened and tightened again if knocking sounds are heard)"

I've never had to do that.

Thanks Nick, so forgive me for seeming stupid but are you saying that there SHOULD be a hole on the top of the guage and that the plastic thing shouldn't be in it, its just a delivery item? Answer to your question ref oil in the piston cylinder - no I didn't. Once I put it all back together again I poured about a quart from memory into the red box where the dipstick is, and that is now registering on the upper mark on the stick.....

Thanks Andrew I followed the instructions sent by Vigo but there was nothing specific about HOW to ventilate the system, just an injunction to do it. It's not clear to me what "move out piston till oil comes out" means. Similarly I didn't add oil to the chamber for the same reason, but added to the red box later. When I go home today I'll look at your instructions and see if I can follow them. Oh to be an engineer.....

Hi Lewis

Yes, when my press was delivered, part of the instructions was to cut the top off the nipple, so there is a little hole.

Sounds like you've got an airlock

Kind regards

Nick

Nick and Andrew: Sorted! At least I think so, no fruit to press tonight so did a bit of testing with wood and the dial started registering as soon as the pressure came on and it looked pretty meaty. Thanks so much guys, I was starting to despair....
