Hi all. I am interested in collecting the names of some early Canadian nurserymen who were apple breeding pioneers, and helped advance Canadian agriculture as part of their business. After collecting a few names I intend to write Canada Post and suggest they make a series of stamps in their honour. So far I can think of two people:

1.) Francis Peabody Sharp of Woodstock, New Brunswick, who introduced the New Brunswick apple, and Crimson Beauty, and sold many apple trees to farmers in New Brunswick and nurseries in the North Eastern United States (ie., Stark Bros).

2.) Charles Arnold of Paris, Ontario, who introduced the Ontario apple, Arnold's Beauty, Arnold's Pride, Arnold's Spy.

Are there any others out there? I would prefer to stick to citizen scientists, and not government employees or university professors. But if the list would be too short we could add a few. They might include:

3.) Dr Charles Gibb of Abbotsford, Quebec, author of "Fruits for the Cold North: A Report on Russian Fruits," who travelled to Europe and Russia in 1882 (along with Prof Joseph Budd of Iowa State Agricultural College) and brought back numerous Russian cultivars which were used in cross-breeding programs to increase winter hardiness.

4.) William T. Macoun, who worked at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawas for many years as "The Dominion Horticulturalist,' and was the author of "The Apple in Canada: Its cultivation and Improvement," and several other books, and undertook many apple cross-breeding experiments starting in 1899.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers,

Christina.

I'd suggest including William Saunders, first Director of Canada's Experimental Farm System, and developer of several cold-hardy crabapple cultivars including (one of my favorites), Columbia Crabapple. Leads/info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Applecrab

Good luck!

i know that the university of saskatoon has been developing cold-hardy apple varieties. https://www.agwest.sk.ca/blog/posts/celebrating-100-years-of-horticulture-at-usask.html

i really like the story of the ambrosia apple. might be cool to include an apple variety that folks will recognise.
