The wonderful Hartpury perry orchard trust has sent me some perry pear scions and I will mostly graft them onto Pyrus rootstock.  I do have some quince rootstock and some Comice scions for interstem grafting, but I wondered if anyone had successfully grafted perry pears onto quince directly.  My failure rate last year was 50%+ but there must be some varieties that work.

Looking on line I found several reference articles on dessert and culinary pears that are compatible with quince but nothing on perry pears.

Can anyone help?

Kind regards

Neil

Do not graft perry pears on to quince, they have various levels of incompatibility as shown in Long Ashton trial of the 60’s, detailed in the book “Perry Pears”.

Pyrus com,

Pyro Dwarf,

Pyrus kinchella.

Are the main perry pear rootstocks used in the uk.

Quince rootstocks can be used but only if you use an inter-stem of a compatible variety, Beurre Hardy is listed as compatible and has been tested in trials.

Thanks Vince, I will try and track down the Long Ashton research for interest's sake but take your advice on sticking to Pyrus sp.

Many thanks

Neil
