Hi,

I was wondering if basket presses could be made as efficient as rack and cloth presses by simply adding circular racks in between the mash? Its seems logical but haven't seen any designs or anyone doing this.

Any obvious stumbling blocks that I'm missing?

Thanks,
dhruv.

I have seen this done by a winemaker in Australia who had turned his hand to cider and was using a full scale vertical grape basket press on apples and pears. He had modified it simply by including 3 or 4 synthetic plastic discs stacked at intervals through the mash.  I think he claimed yield increases of ca 10% or so.

I’ve also heard of others doing this.

I have also seen this, also in Australia... Possibly the same producer Andrew saw?
If your aim is to have higher output than with your hydraulic rack-and-cloth press, have you considered the horizontal bladder press? These are quite popular with cidermakers in France and in Spain. Some are very big (I have seen one that had a capacity of 15 tons in Spain), while the smaller ones are like 800 kg ler load.
but there are other manufacturers.

Hi Claude, these are again as expensive as belt presses (unless I'm mistaken).

The idea behind the basket press is that it retains the familiarity of our standard hydraulic  presses and the basket can be made quite cheaply in a SS fabrication shop. I was thinking of starting small, between 250kg to 500kg which will help achieve a maximum pressure of 140 psi (if need be) with an easily available 60 to 100 odd ton hydraulic press.
