I recently bought 4 recycled (ex mango chutney) food grade blue screw
top barrels from Smiths of Dean. They seemed to be perfect fermenting
vessels but I seem unable to screw the lids on tight enough for it to
be completely air tight. Has anyone else had any experience with
containers like this? I have got a fair seal on one with two lorry
straps to force the lid down but the rest are proving difficult. Any
ideas?

We have used several of these in the past, from Smiths, with no problem.
We just screwed them as tight as we could once fermentation had
finished and the cider was good to the end, but then we could have
been lucky!

Vasoline on the thread seems to have solved any small problems we have had with them
