Hi Nigel

They have just changed the way they tax alcohol, its only the alcohol that is taxed not the quantity of drink. So if you have 2200 litres of 7% cider you calculate the amount of alcohol (2200 litres x 7% = 154 litres of alcohol x a tax rate with a threshold discount and allowance).

As you would expect there are still / sparkling cider rates, thresholds, allowances and other rubbish civil servants come up with these days to make life even more difficult.

You do have to register yourself as a small producer but tax kicks in if you produce more that 4500 hectolitres (450,000 litres per year!). You’re going to need a bigger barn!

When I talked to a tax bloke he said this was more of a mailing list to find out who is out there for e-mails, govt information etc. I don’t think Rachel will be round for your cash, give her a pint of cider instead.

Check out the gov website https://www.gov.uk/guidance/check-if-youre-eligible-for-small-producer-relief-on-alcohol-duty

Hi Bryan,

I think there is something wrong with your numbers, the duty kicks in at 500L of pure alcohol, however from 500L of pure alcohol to the next band up you will get a 90% discount on the duty payable.

The link you have provided is out of date as new documents were published feb 2025 https://www.gov.uk/guidance/alcoholic-products-technical-guide.
