Hi all,

I’m based in West Dorset; 8 trees from which I’d expect to get approx 500l this year at around 8%.

I only press windfalls - have just had my first pressing with og 1.045, which is to be expected. Acidity tasted a little low (haven’t measured).

So the question - my first pressing is 3 weeks earlier than usual, which isn’t surprising given the hot dry conditions, but I was wondering how everyone else is finding this year, given other fruit (sloes, blackberries, raspberries etc all went very early) ?

Awful year to be honest...again. Our soil is quite free draining (light sanady loam) so many trees are losing their leaves, so much fruit is around 25-50% their usual size, and quite a few tasteless. I'm waiting to see if some of the later varieties can recover enough for use/sale.

Pressed some Perry pears this week. Exceptionally early, but  came out at sg 1.070.

Ciders are ripening here in Wells Som. As well. Thatchers announced they are pressing three weeks early.

I am in S Devon. I should think 3 weeks early is about right. I haven't pressed anything yet, but keep thinking I should do a few tests. I have a cider apple Reine de Hatives which is normally a fairly boring tasting bittersweet but this year it seems sweet and has got some good tannin. We will see. Heavy crop but small apples on virtually all the trees.

From Nottinghamshire UK:
Most of our cider apple crop has already fallen, sadly. Coloured up - but white pips. It was meant to be a "good year" going by the cycle some of our trees have adopted.
Our biggest problem this year is Brown Rot which has swept through many trees (we do not spray) - I can only assume this is due to the very dry conditions & elevated temperatures putting the trees under stress. Similarly the trees have been autumnal looking for 2 or 3 weeks & shedding their leaves. Survival mode?
However there's a glut of dessert apples & many types of pear (perry, culinary & dessert) so all is not lost.
We hope to press this weekend as early, very ripe fruit we've already collected (Katy, Discovery, etc) are already "going over".

Pressed some Beauty of Bath a few weeks back, mainly to shake down all the pressing kit.
Our trees have dropped quite a lot but they are still loaded with apples.  Ellis Bitter and Dabinett seem to be doing well but others are very small.
Will probably start pressing in a couple of weeks.

Somerset, near Cheddar.

I'm in North Yorkshire, my small orchard is on heavy clay. I will press my first apples today, mainly Katy. They are fully ripe and taste good but are smaller than usual partly due to the heavy crop. This is earlier than I would expect by about a week. My crop is looking good considering the drought. Only time will tell
