Hi all,

We are currently looking at kegging some of our cider, the most cost-effective method that I can find is to use the disposable/recycle-able plastic Petainer kegs. I have checked through the archives and cannot find too much information on the subject. Has anyone used these? Are they suitable for an unpasteurized semi-dry sparkling cider? Thanks in advance for any information.

I have been using Dolium kegs and they are suitable for live cider although once under pressure, if they are to be kept a while before sending out, one needs to keep an eye on the pressure, as it can go up if the yeast kicks off again.  These kegs are only good to 3.5bar but if your cider is at 3.5 bar it will dispense like foam, I am currently putting 2.5 bar of carbonation into my cider.

We'd be interested in learning more about your Petainer experiences - particularly for export. Was visiting one of www.cidercellars.com distributors in the USA and saw a shipment of Eric Bordolet ciders in Petainer kegs. There's growing demand for kegged ciders owing to the growing number of cider-only pubs on this side of the pond.

Hi Dennis,

Do you carbonate in the keg (natrually?) or before somehow?

Thanks
Ben

We tried a test keg yesterday, cider was carbonated to about 18PSI before filling the Petainer. First glass came out and appeared to go flat very quickly. Currently have the keg in the fridge and going to see if it pours any better in a day or so.

Bern I am both keg conditioning and force carbonating. Carbonation is done in keg, there are videos on youtube showing you how.

Ted you are carbonating at too low a pressure, I am currently carbonation at 2.5 bar which is about 37.5psi and maintaining the same top pressure on the keg for dispense.

We have not been carbonating in the Petainer just to clear that up. We have the cider carbonated to 18PSI in our stainless steel fermenter (which when bottling has given us a very nice level of carbonation) and then we're filling the Petainer off of this. The Petainer we used was the sample given to us by the Customer Rep. and it was already "charged". Perhaps by increasing the top pressure while dispensing will help with maintaining the bubbles on pouring, thanks for the advice Denis.

Ted,

what pressure was the keg charged to? It will need to be at the same pressure as the carbonation or the co2 can boil off while the pressure equalises when filling.
