Good afternoon,

Just wondering if there is a general ballpark figure or range regarding maximum, potential yield, in harvest weight, for apples from trees grafted onto MM106 rootstock; growing in Scotland in Inverness area, IV12 5LE?

Thanks if anyone can help,

David Cox

Forgive me for asking questions instead of giving answers but - in what I assume to be a rather windy and rainy area of the world, did someone advise you to plant trees on MM106, or was this your idea simply because it is freely available?

An "expert" professional visited the site and subsequently advised before supplying the trees, > 190 back in 2015/16 into a 1.6 acre field.

Probably not too surprisingly a few were pushed off the vertical over time and I have recently re-staked a few.  I also restricted the main trunk height to around 4 feet.

I also planted a mixed hedge at the same time, comprising blackthorn, hawthorn, hazel and dog rose,  which has established itself well and offers some protection.

Harvested around 500kg of apples this year, some varietis more productive than others.

Any general advice on possible yields gratefully received and I appreciate it is not an exact science :-)

David

The average yield from cider bush orchards is around 25 to 30 tons per hectare. Now this is in possibly nicer climate compared to yours, and in reasonably fertile soil.
Your yield will depend on so many factors it is very difficult to predict. But will probably be lower than above figure. Maybe cut in half would be reasonable?
