Juice and strain (J&S) may have competition next year in the starter/small-scale cider making scene. Please have a look at the alternatives and see what you think.

Looks classy… with all the right marketing spin words too.

Where do I start with it??

Alchema cider homebrewer” – so it starts on a misconception then. And then it builds on it; “Takes your favorite fruits, sugar, water and yeast and transforms them into your very own craft cider.” End even goes so far to be “a connected setup that uses an iOS app to help you select recipes and keep tabs on the fermentation process.” Mind you, with the iOS app that be the closest the cider homebrewer comes to an ‘apple’

Lovely.

Is this the kind of competition that you were looking for? Sorry… loving the technology but much prefer the traditional methods.

Sorry. I know I didn’t have to mock it, but it left me very little choice.

If it gets the goahead, I forsee quite a few sharing a garage shelf in the future with the icecream maker, egg cooker and popcorn maker. The novelty will wear off quickly, but not before a load of plastic is wasted.

"In 2014, after seeing my friends and family struggle for years with trying to brew their own cider, I decided to create Alchema."

As soon as I saw the email I deleted it, sounds like the right decision.

Muppets should stick to making wine from kits.

I'm hugely disappointed that it doesn't appear to boil the apple wort. For those who brew cider, this should surely be a sine qua non?

Didn't see any hops added either! Not sure what one does if you want a second drink, wait a fortnight?

Wait, it costs 299$?

You can  get a brand new 20 L scale cidermaking kit for much less than that...

I knew I should have majored in Kickstarter scams that badly reinvent the wheel... This is the new ''As seen on TV'' craze.

Bit like one of these, depends how inefficient you want your gimmick to be.

Actually if you want to make three wine bottles of cider, such a juicer could be vaguely a reasonable choice...

Here we're talking about a device that makes apple infused sugar wine.

Besides, I don't think their UV sanitizer will be very effective considering that they are recommending that people add (absolutely non-sterile) storebought fruit to the flask.

Claude,

You'll find more information on their website: http://www.alchema.com/

No offence taken. Now if you'd called me Niven, Neville, Kevin, Gavin etc., that would have been different!

Haha this is pretty laughable.

My problem is with the use of the term cider - surely this is a bad country wine maker!

The main issue for most consumers will be that all of the recipes are going to taste pretty awful, sharp and very yeasty. Especially when modern consumers expect fizzy, sweet and ultra-clear cider.

Im ashamed to admit that when I was a lot younger I tried making pinapple wine (they have it in the video). Was truly disgusting, even when aged and sweetened!

"Laughable" maybe. I just checked, they now have 214 backers with US$59,503 pledged!

Where did I go wrong with "Juice and Strain"?

This could be a Win Win:

Yep...surly it will be advertized on those TV gimmic kitchen applance infomertials.

There are so many people around the world who are addicted to buying gimmick appliances that he still could make a fortune on that aspect.

As far as cidermaking, we all know that making quality cider has an 'Art and Science' to it.

If its real, the cider machine can only deal with the science side of the cider making process. The whole 'Art' side of things can only be tackeled by 'Human' intrepretation of variations.

He will probably still make good bundle of cash on the inital run of product.

But as a result of the strange quality cell-phone-computer cider, more consumers would soon want 'Our Real Craft Cider'

Win win whoo-ya!
:-)
