I have some Hewes Virginia crab apples that ripened early in August here in Virginia.   I froze the whole apples and plan to press them whole in a day or two.    How long should I thaw before pressing...a few hours, over night or longer?  Thanks.

Time required depends a lot on how the apples are contained... If you don't have much, and can lay them on a flat board, a few hours are sufficient. If in a bushel or in a pail, you need to mix them once in a while for them to thaw evenly.
Virginias are quite small, so won't need as much time to thaw.
Also if you wish to have some concentration effect, then you thaw them less to still have the core frozen when you press.

The best I can say is check them every half hour - once they become soft you can press.

4-5 hours should be enough

Thanks Claude!

I have about a bushel, maybe 1 1/2 bu. frozen in 4-5 large plastic bags and hoping to get enough juice for a single variety batch or at least to mix with Pomme Gris or Harrison juice.  I'll thaw them in my plastic clothes basket that I use to was apples and give it a go.

Harrison apples are ripening here early this year.   About 25% have dropped in the last week and expect the rest to drop over the next week.

Again, Thanks much.
