Claude mentioned this unit.
I have one as well. It works pretty well and is a reportedly more accurate than ripper titrations. It’s real best use, however, is for red wines where ripper titrations aren’t possible due to the wine’s color. For cider, the ripper endpoint is easy to see.
The best thing, however is this cute little battery powered magnetic stirrer that comes with the deluxe kit
It makes for easier testing. The LED light helps see the endpoint more clearly.
I ended up going back to ripper titrations using the stirrer because the reagents are cheaper and the results are accurate enough for me.
I made a little kit using a 2 oz eye dropper bottle filled with 25% sulfuric, another dropper bottle with starch solution, and some 3 mL syringes pre-filled with 0.0156N iodine and stored in a light blocking container. Samples are taken with a 25mL plastic pipette. With this setup, I can do free SO2 tests right at the tanks in the cellar, without having to bring samples back to the lab.
Here’s my procedure:
Take 25mL sample of cider with pipette, place in stirrer beaker
Turn stirrer and LED on
Squirt a couple droppers full of Sulfuric acid
Squirt a bit of starch solution
Titrate with the syringe of Iodine until the solution turns consistently blue for 15 seconds
Free SO2 = mL dispensed * 20.
