Claude mentioned this unit.

I have one as well.   It works pretty well and is a reportedly more accurate than ripper titrations.   It’s real best use, however, is for red wines where ripper titrations aren’t possible due to the wine’s color.    For cider, the ripper endpoint is easy to see.

The best thing, however is this cute little battery powered magnetic stirrer that comes with the deluxe kit
It makes for easier testing.   The LED light helps see the endpoint more clearly.

I ended up going back to ripper titrations using the stirrer because the reagents are cheaper and the results are accurate enough for me.

I made a little kit using a 2 oz eye dropper bottle filled with 25% sulfuric, another dropper bottle with starch solution, and some 3 mL syringes pre-filled with 0.0156N iodine and stored in a light blocking container.    Samples are taken with a 25mL plastic pipette.   With this setup, I can do free SO2 tests right at the tanks in the cellar, without having to bring samples back to the lab.

Here’s my procedure:
Take 25mL sample of cider with pipette, place in stirrer beaker
Turn stirrer and LED on
Squirt a couple droppers full of Sulfuric acid
Squirt a bit of starch solution
Titrate with the syringe of Iodine until the solution turns consistently blue for 15 seconds
Free SO2 = mL dispensed * 20.

I have the same unit and it does work well, so would recommend the Vinmetric line. If I were to buy a new one, I would spend the extra $100 and go with the SC-300 which also does the TA measurements.

Yes, the 300 is nice as it includes a good pH meter. Comes with 2 electrodes, one for SO2 and the other for pH.

I have the SC-300 and it works great. The downside is the cost of the acidifier and titrant not that they are expensive but the shelf life is only 6 months, so unless you are doing many different batches the solutions expire before you even make a dent in the bottle.

How many TA tests can you run per bottles of solutions? How long does it take (average) to run one test?

I'm looking at the SC-300 or the Hanna Instruments HI84502 — which is about double the price — but fully automated. I'm looking to test the TA and pH on ~20 wild trees this fall so speed is an important factor. The HI84502 doesn't test SO2.

Each test (SO2 in this example) takes 2ml of each component, so it depends on bottle size. A 100ml bottle will give you about 50 tests...

you can do up to 50 tests per bottle.

It says it Takes about 2 min for a test. For me because I am doing one test then putting it away for a few months before I do the next one I forget everything and have to read the instructions every time I use it, it takes me more like 10 min per test :)

You don't need any hugely expensive complicated kit or auto titrators just to measure TA. You can do it for pennies. See http://www.cider.org.uk/acid_titration.html.  Many home winemaking or brewing shops or online suppliers will sell you what you need. Or you can get simple titration kits.

20 samples should take you around an hour to measure.

Any particular reason you need to measure TA AND pH? The measure of pH is not really relevant for individual varietal analysis of wild trees - TA is much more useful for this. You would need pH only for the blend, for dosing SO2, and you can use pH strips for this as accuraccy isn't that essential.

As Andrew mentioned, a TA kit is very inexpensive (10 or 20$) and is plenty sufficient for your 20 measures.
