I'm a singer and have begun to have issues with inflamed vocal cords which make it difficult to sing. I've been given a diagnosis of LPR , and the treatment is similar to conventional heartburn (GERD).

Along with medicine (Prilosec), I've been given a strict low-acid diet (along with no caffeine, chocolate, or high fat cheese) for the next few months at the very least, and perhaps more lifelong if things don't clear up. Essentially, I can't eat or drink anything with a pH below 5.

Naturally, this means forgoing cider which, while there are worse things in the world, has been rather less than ideal.

I'm wondering...for those of you who have suffered from heartburn, have you found any link between your cider drinking and your heartburn? If so, have you found any treatments that allow you to treat the heartburn while still enjoying your cider?

I suffered with acid reflux for years, worst were pastry products, sausage rolls were right off the menu, even bread as well as loads of other things would start it off. I now take omeprazole daily and since starting them about 10+years ago I have not had a single case of acid reflux.

Hope this helps,

Cheers

Vince

Matthew,

I literally feel your pain, as a cider maker/drinker who gets reflux. I don't find cider to be worse than any other alcoholic drink when it comes to acid reflux, but it definitely doesn't help. Whiskey and beer are as bad, if not worse for me. From what I've read, the main problem is the alcohol, not necessarily the acid. The alcohol relaxes the sphincter between your stomach and esophagus, and the acid comes bubbling up. One thing that helps me is to limit the number of ciders I drink at a time to one or two max. Also, try not to mix cider with fatty or spicy foods. Those trigger me worse than anything, and the cider is insult to injury after eating like crap. Everything in moderation. With the right meds and diet change, hopefully you can get back to some moderate cider consumption!

I get it occasionally when I drink too much cider too many consecutive days in a row. That being said, I used to get it all the time when I ate dairy and after cutting that out of my diet, it basically went away. 🤷

Hi Matt,
Just weighing in here re acid reflux and GERD. Part of the problem in my opinion is that conventional medicine will tell you that too much acid is your issue but in reality, as we age we have less stomach acid. There is not enough acid to do the job of breaking down food. Betaine is hydrochloric acid and is something you can take to supplement your already depleted supply of stomach acid. Add to that a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar each day in a glass of water, yes, apple cider vinegar. As far as cider goes, I would think a clean cider would be not too harmful in smaller amounts. Look up Betaine and stomach acid online and see more info about this.
Good luck to you,
Lisa

Yeah, I don’t really buy cider being so acid that it causes reflux either. It was interesting to hear that alcohol relaxes the sphincter. I just started having this problem also and my research said fat relaxes it too. Chips and guacamole and some alcohol? No bueno

I was diagnosed in 2008: Barrett's oesophagus. Was on PPIs for nearly 4
years. But PPIs caused me bile reflux -- which the doctors would not
discuss. So I did my own research. It's a very long story but there is a
lot of evidence (that most doctors are ignorant of) that PPIS can be
dangerous. It's all written up at www.med.torrens.org/gord/

It's surely off topic here but if anyone wants to discuss you can email me
via the web site.
