Hello,

I’m looking for feedback on the use of rice hulls to improve juice extraction during apple pressing.

How much do you typically add?
What increase in juice yield have you observed?
Is the improvement in extraction economically worthwhile once the cost of the rice hulls is taken into account?
Have you noticed any impact on the sensory characteristics of the juice or cider?
Have you observed any microbiological issues or changes associated with their use?

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience.

Yann

I have used rice hulls on hybrid wine grapes, which tend to be tough to press.

Addition rate 10lb/ton though I know some folks go 2-3x that. I haven't bothered to measure the additional yield but I noticed that the pomace is much drier with less whole berries staying intact, a known problem with these kinds of grapes. For me at least, rice hulls are very inexpensive if you can avoid excess shipping costs. If I can get them included in a pallet of other supplies or pick them up, I always do before harvest.

No problems with cleaning, rubber bladder abrasion, sensory issues or contamination issues. Also haven't had any complaints from farmers who have taken the pomace for their livestock.
