My standard practice is:
Encourage students to ref material which is in their first language but the majority of refs must be to English material as I am at an English University.
One of the reasons being I would like to unlock info in non English languages

A few weeks ago I went to the Nottingham Trent University (a UK University) Art & Design degree show. Whilst there I happened upon a dissertation on display that had in the order of 50% references to Chinese language material. My reaction was: Wow! Cool! Enlightened! Inclusive! Progressive! Relevant! Appropriate!
