LockDown Browser is a web browser specifically designed to provide a more secure environment during online exams. Specifically, it ensures that students can only interact with the exam content until it is submitted for grading. It is used by many educational institutions and guarantees that online exams are as secure and reliable as traditional paper exams.

When using Respondus LockDown Browser, many functions that could be used for cheating are blocked. For example, it does not allow opening new tabs or windows, taking screenshots, accessing other applications, using keyboard shortcuts to copy and paste, etc.

The browser integrates with the management systems of an educational institution and ensures that exams are conducted fairly and in accordance with the rules established by the instructor. In some cases, it can also be used in conjunction with other monitoring tools such as Respondus Monitor. The latter uses the student's webcam to monitor their behavior during the exam.

Likewise, LockDown Browser can be questioned for its security. The combination of the browser with Respondus Monitor has sparked debate about privacy in some cases. This can become very problematic if clear consent is not obtained from the student.

The following is a list of Respondus LockDown Browser keyboard shortcuts for Windows and macOS that may assist students with disabilities. Although many of the below shortcuts work within standard web browsers, some are unique to Respondus LockDown Browser.

LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment in UB Learns. When you use LockDown Browser to take a test, you are unable to print, copy, go to other websites, access other applications or close a test until it is submitted for grading.

Honorlock, Proctorio, and MonitorEDU are alternative remote proctoring services. Honorlock has the most artificial intelligence integrated into the utility. All of the applications will prevent students from leaving the examination by locking the browser. Additionally, the apps include identity verification.

You cannot use the mouse or trackpad to right-click nor keyboard to do shortcuts. Your function keys will not work. Respondus only lets you exit an assessment after you submit your answers to be graded. The copy and paste commands are shut off while tests are in session. You cannot open new tabs in the Respondus browser.

The LockDown Browser will not let you do screen capture. A test that is programmed to run with Respondus LockDown will not run in another browser. The Respondus package is compatible with learning management systems. Blackboard Learn and Canvas are popular e-learning programs that work with the LockDown Browser. You can log in to begin proctored exams once Respondus is integrated into your LMS.

Important Note: We strongly recommend using an Ethernet (wired) Internet connection while taking your exam in Lockdown Browser. If you lose your Internet connection during the exam, it will lock up the browser and not allow you to save answers, move on to other questions, submit or exit the exam.

Important Note: You may be prompted to close any programs or windows that are still open. Select the option to close these programs from the prompts that appear. Sometimes Lockdown browser will be unable to close an application. You will need to manually close these applications before you can proceed.

Troubleshooting Lockdown Browser: If you experience problems with the Lockdown browser, visit Respondus Technical support, Knowledgebase: Respondus LockDown Brower > Student Support FAQ for more information.

Because the LockDown Browser is a shell that sits on top of an Internet browser (Internet Explorer for PC users and Safari for Mac Users), we recommend students access their course with either Internet Explorer or Safari and take a non-LDB enabled practice quiz to resolve any settings and media plug-ins prior to taking a test with LockDown Browser.

If you lose your Internet connection during the exam, it will lock up the browser and not allow you to save answers, move on to other questions, submit or exit the exam. This occurs when there is a second level link being accessed from a primary level link. However, link blocking usually does not occur until the student enters a quiz and starts accessing links within a quiz. Usually, this comes from configuration issues with the underlying Internet Explorer browser components.

If the LockDown Browser stops responding before you start an exam or if you see a blank page that fills the computer screen, this could be due to security windows that have popped up behind the LockDown browser. If you have not started the exam, close the browser and address the security pop-up windows. You should be able to reopen the browser without issue. However, if you have started the exam, the only known workaround is to restart your computer and address the pop-up windows before beginning the exam.
