Thisexpanded third edition of The New Teacher Book grew out of Rethinking Schools workshops with early career teachers. It offers practical guidance on how to flourish in schools and classrooms and connect in meaningful ways with students and families from all cultures and backgrounds.

My first year of teaching at an urban high school was trial by fire, and in my attempts to teach my students well, I was always looking for books that would illuminate my experience and hone my teaching practice. Most books were fine; there was nothing necessarily wrong with them. But they always seemed to neglect the things that mattered most.

When the editors of Rethinking Schools first conceived of this book, we thought back to our days as new teachers. We hoped to create the book we needed in those sometimes exhilarating, sometimes lonely, often hard first days of our teaching careers. This book is meant as a conversation among colleagues. We hope it is a conversation that helps you keep your vision and values intact as you struggle in institutions that may or may not be those citadels of idealism where you imagined yourself teaching.

We wrote this book because we want you to hold on to those impulses that brought you to teaching: a deep caring for students, the opportunity to be the one who sparks student growth and change, as well as the desire to be involved in work that matters. We need teachers who want to work in a place where human connections matter more than profit.

Rethinking Schools editors have assembled numerous books that focus on creating social justice curriculum: from Rethinking Columbus to Rethinking Mathematics to Teaching for Black Lives to Rethinking Sexism, Gender, and Sexuality. We hope you will look to them for curricular help. In all of our books, and in our quarterly Rethinking Schools magazine, we celebrate the lessons and units and strategies that worked for our students, that created days when we walked out of the building celebrating the joy of teaching.

And what we know from our years in the classroom is that we only get good at it when we do it year after year. So we wrote this book to assure you that you will get better as the years move on if you continue to study your classroom, hone your craft, read professional literature, keep up with news, and connect with your colleagues and communities. Teaching is an art. Keep practicing.

This third edition of Primary Sources surveyed more than 20,000 public school teachers from all 50 states on their views about teaching in an era of change. The 2014 update looks at the Common Core one year later. The full report PDFs include the complete survey questionnaires and data, and detailed methodology.

The Kansas Early Learning Standards (KELS) is a document that provides information and guidance to early childhood providers and teachers, including early primary grade teachers, on the developmental continuum of learning for children from birth through kindergarten. The KELS provide information regarding what young children should know and be able to do as a result of engagement with caring knowledgeable adults, evidence-based curriculum, and developmentally appropriate activities. It is a dynamic resource that providers and teachers can use as they plan activities for, choose and implement curriculum, and engage in conversations with young children and their families around early learning.

A collaborative group of Kansas early childhood partners has worked together to review and complete this fourth revision to the Kansas Early Learning Standards. The first document was completed in 2006 with a second revision done in 2009 and a third revision in 2013.

The KSDE Early Childhood team regularly shares updates in KSDEweekly, the weekly newsletter that is the one-stop source for KSDE news and information. You can email ksdew...@ksde.org to request to subscribe to KSDEweekly newsletters. Click here to view previous KSDEweekly updates related to early childhood.

High-quality early learning opportunities prepare students to enter kindergarten at age 5 socially, emotionally and academically prepared for success. KSDE administers several programs that provide funding to support preschool for Kansas students: the Preschool-Aged At-Risk (State Pre-K 4 Year Old At-Risk) program, the Kansas Preschool Pilot, and Early Childhood Special Education (Section 619 of Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Act). While these programs each have unique requirements, KSDE encourages local districts to offer services that support the needs of each student in inclusive environments. KSDE also hosts the State Interagency Coordinating Council (SICC), which is responsible for advising and assisting the Kansas governor and legislature on matters that impact Kansas families with children ages birth to 5 who have, or are at risk for, developmental delays. For more information about Preschool Programs visit our Preschool Program link.

To accommodate people with disabilities, on request, auxiliary aides and services will be provided and reasonable modifications to policies and programs will be made. To request accommodations or for more information please contact the Office of General Counsel at g...@ksde.org or by 785-296-3201.

Since educators can now go online and print a copy of their licenses, we no longer mail them. *Note: license certificates are only available when the license status is either Current or Next License Cycle Approved. You will need to create an account in our Educator Licensing Online system if you don't already have one. Steps to print the certificate:

When your license is approved, you will receive a separate approval email. If our team has questions about your application or if documentation is missing, we will contact you. Otherwise, you can log back into your ELO account and see if the license was issued.

Our online license lookup page also indicates when an educator is an "Applicant" for a new license and when a renewal/extension is pending. Please also refer to the following question on processing time.

Please review the list of applications at Apply for an Educator License to find the application you need. If you are applying for a license for the first time or for an additional license category (teacher, pupil services, administrator), you will need to apply for an initial" license.

You should be able to print your certificate as soon as you receive the email from the ELO system that your application has been approved. The license file you download is usually two pages, with your current license being the first page and your new license being the second. School districts can view issued licensee information on our online license lookup page.

As of January 31, 2014, all applicants for early childhood, elementary/regular education, special education, reading teacher, and reading specialist must pass the Wisconsin Foundations of Reading Test. Other tests may be required by an approved educator preparation program as part of their approved program.

Registration information and testing fees are found on the appropriate testing vendor/administrator websites as you register for the tests. Out-of-state applicants must also pass the tests required by the state in which their teacher education program is located.

At the time you apply to renew or advance your license, you may request that statutory stipulations be removed. Please attach documentation that you have completed the statutory stipulations. Applicants cannot advance their license to the Tier III lifetime level without completing all outstanding statutory stipulations.

You may change the name on your license on the Name and Personal Details page of your next DPI application. If you are changing your name off-cycle, there is a $45 fee for that application. The application to change your name off-cycle is found under Apply for a New License in ELO. Select "Entity Self Service" in the first drop-down menu, "Entity Self Service Activities" in the second drop-down menu, and "Entity Self Service Activity: Change Name Request / Background Check for Faculty [9959]" in the third drop-down menu to open up the application form.

ELO stands for Educator Licensing Online. It is an online system that the Department of Public Instruction uses. The system is free to use; however, current application fees do apply. This system has replaced the old system of paper applications. All licenses are through this system.

Onboarding is the critical process of connecting your current/previous licenses. You must do this successfully in order to renew or reactivate a license. Please read the Onboarding Instructions or watch a how-to video.

ELO is not supported by Safari or on mobile devices (tablets and phones). Using an unsupported browser to complete an application may result in unexpected system behavior. If your browser is an older version than supported by ELO update your browser before starting your application.

If you are able to scan them all as one document and keep the file size under 2MB, that would be best. If not, you can attach one document, submit the application, log back into ELO, and then use the Additional Documents screen to upload the rest. Directions and screenshots can be found on Check My Educator License Application Status.

We strongly encourage you to review the ELO website and the related tips, videos, and technical assistance at Apply for an Educator License. If additional assistance is needed, please contact the ELO Help Desk and explain the issue you are having. We respond to inquiries and requests for assistance in the order they are received and try to do so within three business days.
