Doesthe Garmin Montana 750i include lifetime city navigator updates? I see that it comes with City Navigator installed. I cannot see any confirmation that updates are included, or if I am expected to purchase a map any time I want the update.
If this is included, is there documentation anywhere that says this? I am aware that folks who purchased 750i's when they first came out, do have lifetime updates. I did not want to assume that is still the case.
I have heard that it is included. However, I am not aware of anything in writing. The "sales" web site does not say (or I missed it in the cloud of marketing smoke). It is not listed as an automotive device, although there is a windshield mount for it.
Asking support, I got two different answers. First, only automotive products received lifetime City Navigator updates.. and second, any device that includes City Navigator installed on the device, will receive lifetime City Navigator updates. Looks like the second one is true.
This is for sure? It DOES include lifetime for City Navigator? For what region of the world is this and how detailed is it? I ordered my Montana 750i and don't know a whole lot about it, but I'm reading up on it while awaiting its arrival. I am in Japan. What region is included in the updates and how do I update it? Thank you in advance.
A few years ago Garmin introduced running track mode when it launched the Forerunner 745. As you ran your first 2-3 laps of the track, it learned the track, and then every subsequent lap after that on that track (even future workouts) would be perfectly aligned to the lanes you were running in. Thus, perfect GPS tracks and exact track distances. The downside is the calibration loops of imperfection.
Thus, Garmin did exactly what I hoped they would do: Built their own database of tracks using all that learned track data over the last few years. Garmin says their 400m track database currently has more than 11,000 tracks in it globally. They say this database will be updated to your device regularly, kinda like maps, but not quite as scheduled hard-set as those updates.
For fun, today I ran with the FR965 in database mode (I ensured no learned tracks were on it), and then the FR955 with the previous firmware in learned track mode. The results were identically perfect:
You can disable it within the triathlon sport mode settings at any time. Options like Lock Device after transition are still there. Also, this works for both the custom Multisport (aka Duathlon) and Swimrun sport profiles.
Thank you for the updates. Having recently acquired a 965 from a 945, it appears that Garmin has done away with the quick release kit for triathlon after the 955. Is that accurate? Because I cannot find one. Having automatic transitions does no good unless you intend to keep the watch on your wrist which is not helpful on the bike. Thoughts?
Yes, it requires two devices. But i also think its better. You only need any old Edge (a used one ;-) wich can be ist as a secondary monitor for your watch. It will give you better readable numbers on your bike leg and only the watch will record anything, including Auto transition etc.
Using a watch as a bike computer will not be a good experience.
The old quick release kit was really bulky, running with it was no nice experience.
You can start at home and it will snap you to the track as soon as you are close enough.
Ray showed it, i think in the review of the 745. You only have to dig a little on this website for examples.
What does this mean
Does it work like apple track detection
Meaning can you use track mode when you get to the track but use the normal run mode till you get there and then have them merge into the same run
Not everyone starts off there track workouts at the track alot of people start at home or whatever and then warmup as they run to the track
We should be able to use both modes together just like apple does it
Please confirm if this is how it works now as of the update and if not we need to get Garmin to add this feature
Obviously we need a full video detailing the Jump Rope activity featuring a guest appearance with Tori Boggs. Probably just a release away from jump rope just a matter of time before it hits my 310xt.
What i gain is some cosmetic improvement for displaying the track (seems irrelevant to m e) and a slight increase in accuracy (i am running with Stryd which is sufficiently accurate, even for track running).
I know we are really pushing the limits on the 945 LTE. But agree it would be great to continue the trend of matching the 955. It is after all the only model that offers an ongoing revenue stream with the LTE subscription.
This is available since years:
You need an Edge device wich is able to work as an extended display. The watch will broadcast your data to it and you can read it on the edge, but everything is done on the watch.
I think any old device from at least the x20 Series is capable of this. Google for Garmin extended display. Or check here, Ray did write about it.
I think that would be the best if Garmin can differentiate the laps (predefined segments) from the training steps. You should be able to add a segment by a long press of the lap button and proceed to the next training segment by a short press. Or any other option would be great what the Garmin design team can figure out.
Since the new updates, my Epix Gen2 has been transmitting a distance traveled of 21,475km after strength training with weights. This is quite tedious for statistics in Strava or TrainingPeaks if you also do cycling.

I have tried to install the updates and it fails and the messages just keep coming back. I have been dismissing the messages, which leads to the a message saying the Software will be updated tonight.
This is very annoying. I have connected my watch to the computer (Garmin express) today hoping it would solve this issue; unfortunately, it didn't. I have even changed the settings so that I don't get update reminders, yet the message still shows up. How can I fix this?
If this is not successful, please reach out to your local Garmin Product Support team. To do this, type "
support.garmin.com" in your address bar and use the Garmin Support Center to research your issue. Once you get far enough in the search, you will see (at the bottom of the page) some contact options, which may include Call, Chat, and Email.
Please listen Garmin as this is not funny. I prefer to have reliable devices which have less functions than devices with so many flaws (other problems are for another time). I am really looking forward for implementing improvements from your side and not only pushing new features to your devices which are used for 5% of buyers of your products.
Maybe you are using different Garmin device or maybe you have different Garmin Express. Mine doesn't allow to resume download when previous download crashed. Also I have very often issue with my Garmin Fenix that Garmin Express is asking me to unplug and plug again device after "successful" update of maps, apps, software etc. This is another thing which is very annoying and we are still speaking only with software used mostly for updates (and guess, I also have something to say regarding devices itself).
I agree That I would like to update my maps without the device. One reason is my update took >6 hours, and I cannot use the GPS. Yes my internet was 48mb/s and 32 GB RAM. The download took only about 30 minutes, but the rest of the time was configuring the maps to my 700i. So yes it would be nice to place my update on my microSD card.
You can install the map to a sd card if you want to but it's not advised and is not much quicker than installing it to your device, plus there are numerous other files that are downloading during a map update that many devices require. If you're keen to know more see

Today I had a no courses nearby error. On returning home I've connected to Garmin Express which says there are a bunch of map updates, however it says the updated courses are too large to fit on device.
It suggests to choose regions that I want only, however everything is greyed out and not selectable, meaning I cant do anything and cant get any courses on to my device! Any one solved this one?
My Approach X40 wanted to update all 3 regions all at once. and it continually fails at about 70%. I cannot deselect them to see which one is failing as I don't need all the golf courses in the world. I think it might be too large to fit. I think the older versions of Garmin express allowed you to deselect the courses you don't want. The error leaves the watch in a state of "missing golf courses" and then you need a full factory reset. Any suggestions?
Did you ever find a solution? I contacted garmin and followed all there links and reinstalled Garmin Express multiple times. Rebooted the computer and used both a Windows PC and MAC I still get the same error.
2. I tried to update it with Garmin Express (latest version) on a Laptop (new), PC (old) and a brand new Imac. None worked. All computers realised I had connected a hard disc but Garmin Express did not understand it was connected.
4. I did and then Garmin Express found it and I could update watch software but not update Maps. I guess it was due to too small memory on the watch to download all 3 continents data. I could not pick only Europe. I was stuck. This was on my old PC.
After some tries myself with updating maps/courses on my S4 from a PC, I saw that the packages that were part of the update was exceeding the 30 MB total of the watch, and the 18.8 MB free space I had (the only available update was worldwide and it was over 30 MB).
Did your apprach, and started my old Mac. Needed to re-install Garmin express, but after that, I got the option (only option) to update the Europe, Asia and Africa maps/courses, which worked like a charm. Thank you for your post, which solved my issue.
