Insider Session: Applying to the Ignite Challenge
Join us January 9 for a direct Q&A with the Assistant Director of the Ignite Program and learn tips on how to make your work stand out.

Learning about film can prepare you for jobs such as film promotor, equipment technician, producer, screenwriter, video editor, and art director. Film promoters use their marketing skills to spread the word about a show or movie, broadening the size of the audience. Creating a film requires the use of all sorts of equipment, so equipment technicians work behind the scenes, operating everything from monitors and cameras to speakers and sound boards. Producers handle tasks such as hiring the crew, setting the filming schedule, and managing the budget. Video editors organize individual shorts to create a clean, cohesive narrative. Screenwriters come up with scripts that serve as the backbone of the project. Art directors are tasked with managing the overall aesthetic of the film, including sets and costumes.

Obaid-Chinoy will direct a film set 15 years after the end of the last movie, starring British actor Daisy Ridley as she returns to the role of Rey, the heroine of the last trilogy, which wound up in 2019 to mixed reviews.

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, the studio bought by Disney in 2012, said each of the three films would cover different periods in the Star Wars narrative. And each will have a different director.

And the third film will be directed by Dave Filoni, an old hand in the Stars Wars universe, having produced several television series including the wildly successful The Mandalorian, now in its third season.

It is the job of a director to imagine the script in a visual form. As soon as a production has raised the cash it needs, either through being funded or commissioned, they work closely with the producers to appoint the heads of department, such as the director of photography, assistant director and production designer.

At the same time, a director will also be instructing other members of the crew, especially lighting, wardrobe and make-up supervisors. Directors work to get the best performance out of the actors but also need to ensure that all technical aspects are in place to get a great scene filmed.

Take a short course:
Hone your skills in directing by taking a specialist course. Go to the list of training courses recommended by ScreenSkills and see if there is one in directing.

Being a director of photography, cinematographer or producer for film and TV drama, or director or series director in the animation industry. Or you might want to be a director in theatre. Alternatively, you could consider being a director, producer director or series director in the unscripted TV industry.

The Graduate Film program is an intensive three-year conservatory in the Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television that trains students in the art of cinematic storytelling. We focus on helping writer/directors develop a narrative voice and the technical virtuosity to express that voice in cinema.

Students learn by doing, in the classroom and on set. They write, direct, and produce multiple films and exercises, shooting and crewing on each other's projects. Our students transition into the professional world with a reel of short films that showcase their talent, a feature film script, and a range of highly sought technical skills.

If archive footage is in the public domain and has no copyright restrictions, we can supply digital video files of historical film directly by a share file service. Staff will upload files and share a link with the client for downloading. Films that are not in the public domain must be cleared with the rights holder by the requestor before duplication. Read the procedures for duplication.

We should expect the number of repeat directors to fall in the most recent years, as films can take years to get funding, filmed and finished. However, we see an almost-steady decline as far back as my time series goes.

This is in sharp contrast to every other genre, which are all seeing either a rise in shared director credits or no discernable change over the past thirty years. For example, here is the trend for Dramas:

Really interesting. Only 134 directors with over 20 films? Id be curious to know who they are too. Also, how documentary film directors play out statistically with fiction directors. Thanks for the research as always.

Those of us who chose to make movies (and mini series)for television were able to make dozens of films over the decades. Also, we got to make films written by first rate writers, with big stars and great character actors, and got to make them on locations around the world. It was a decision I consciously made early in my career after seeing how many years would go by between directing feature films. The irony is that today top directors go to television to make quality films. And we now have Steven Spielberg, who started in television, trying to protect the Oscars from movies for television.

Otherwise known as cinematographers, the director of photography (DoP) will work with the film director to realise scenes in line with their visions. They manage the camera and lighting crews on a film set, make artistic and technical decisions and review footage in the post-production stage.

You'll need an in-depth knowledge of camera and lighting equipment and what will and won't work for certain shoots, an excellent eye for detail, the ability to make reasoned decisions quickly, and be prepared to both give and take direction. You'll oversee film crews, but if the director has specific intentions, you may have very little control over how a scene is shot.

Working with raw footage in post-production to compile an end result that's suitable for release, a film editor will often work closely with the director to ensure their work is in line with the director's intentions for the film.

It's a runner's job to carry out administrative tasks and aid the smooth running of film production. Your film work will involve setting up locations for a shoot, hiring props and transporting equipment, among other tasks required by the director, actors and other members of the film crew.

In October 1947, 10 members of the Hollywood film industry publicly denounced the tactics employed by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), an investigative committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, during its probe of alleged communist influence in the American motion picture business. These prominent screenwriters and directors, who became known as the Hollywood Ten, received jail sentences and were banned from working for the major Hollywood studios. Their defiant stands also placed them at center stage in a national debate over the controversial anti-communist crackdown that swept through the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Besides the Hollywood Ten, other members of the film industry with alleged communist ties were later banned from working for the big movie studios. The Hollywood blacklist came to an end in the 1960s.
