With the IACSS president Meaghan Morris as acting moderator, the CIACSI Steering Committee (SC) held its ninth meeting in Surabaya on 24th last month. The meeting was much obliged to the courtesy of Melani Budianta at the Univ. of Indonesia and Nur Wulan at the Univ. of Airlangga who are preparing to play host to the next biannual IACSS conference in Indonesia in 2015.

On the top of the agenda was the upcoming Summer School to be held in Hsinchu in July. The local organizer in charge, Chen Kuan-hsing presented a paper on its on-going preparatory works; for its tentative details, see the following section.

At the meeting, the committee agreed to recommend the applicant for new membership in the Consortium, Faculty of Humanities of Airlangga Uiv. to the 5th General Assembly to be held in July in Hsinchu. As to the English version Reader whose manuscripts had been submitted already to the publisher Orient Blackswan last year, the committee confirmed it would be published within this year. And, the yearly budget for 2013/2014 was confirmed as suggested.

A Summary of the 2014 IACSS Summer School in Preparation

Theme: “Introduction to Modern Asian Thought”

The local organizers say they received 127 applications from 21 countries, and a committee to review the application has been setup to select 40 of them. A final list of acceptance will be made public both on the official website for the summer school (http://iics.ust.edu.tw/ss/index.htm) as well as the IACS Society website (http://culturalstudies.asia/) on February 15. They will give these students two months to make sure they are able to attend the Summer School, and a final list of students will be made public on April 15 on the same websites. In the meantime, local organizers are also planning to setup an online learning platform for enlisted students to read and hopefully discuss the readings before the summer school begins, so as to be more prepared for the very intensive course ahead of them.
