Corey, is there a way to make someone or even a horse into Ice? I love this fire effect, and if you could turn someone into Ice with the same effect, could you show us? I cannot seem to figure it out.

After creating a fire image, i started a new project but unfortunately i cannot make the outer glow and inner glow working, the image is always comes in grey. What should i do. Already reset the photoshop cs 3 in its default settings. Thank you and more power.

How many times has this happened to you? You're working on your picture in your favorite image editor of all time, Paint.NET, and you think to yourself, "Man, I sure wish I could have feathered brushes like they do in Photoshop! Or that other free image editor. *cough*" Well think no more! ... Oh wait... Keep thinking about other stuff, but stop thinking about this because I'm going to show you how to fake it! You'll need to use the Clone Stamp and a few layers for everything, and there's really no way to fake fancy brush shapes (that I can think of at the moment) . But this will allow you to have soft brushes and mimic an airbrush effect! Hurray! Soft Brush/Airbrush So often requested, yet until now, we could only sit back and say 'wait until 4.0'. Now, we have the opportunity of saying 'Hey, you know what? We can have soft brushes!' Granted, Photoshop's soft brushes are much more... you know... ...but Paint.NET comes pretty darn close if you use it right! First, you'll need three layers. One that has your main image (or not), one with the color you choose, and a third for your brush.

if you want to add the png with trancperancy in photoshop, you could actualy just go with a fire image on a black background too.
just use an blending mode like negative multiply or screen. play around with the blendmode options for the fire layer.

Photoshop fire effects can be easily obtained using fire brushes. The realistic fire or flame brushes are made using fire stock images and their quality is very important. To obtain a decent looking flame brush, the fire image has to have a black black background. Or the person that makes the brush has to be very patient and crop the fire shape carefully.

Beside the realistic fire brushes, I have also added some abstract fire flames that are great for creating tattoos, T-shirt design and so on. So if you want to add fire in Photoshop you can do it in no time using these great brushes. To help you even more I am planning to gather a list with fire Photoshop tutorials to see these fire brushes in action. So stay tune!

Most of this effect is done using a single tool: Blending Modes. By setting the fire images to particular Blending Modes, you can make the dark background invisible while leaving the brighter fire elements visible.

Place the second fire image where you want it, add a Layer Mask to the layer, and fill it black to make it completely invisible. Now, using the same Brush as before, paint with white to make it visible in and around the first fire effect.

With a total of 250 Smoke and Fire Brushes and Overlays you will get a very flexible bundle that can be applied to many designs. Including Layer Styles for both Photoshop and Affinity, not only the overlays but as well the brushes can be used to create the fire effects. Links to tutorials showing an easy way to achieve this effect are provided.

Hi Jak,

I made as well a small tutorial on how to colorize the smoke with layer styles in affinity:
-effect-smoke-brushes-and-layer-styles-529/#toc_anchor_5

Also you can find some predefined affinity styles including fire effects for free on my website:
-freebies/

Just be aware that the styles might not displayed properly in the styles panel, as described in the bug I have reported here:

I need to take a photo image and create the effect of it being on fire. It seems to be a common item out there and it actually looks like there is a flames effect tool in Photoshop. But I havent stumbled across the best way to do this in Affinity D. Would it be more appropriately done in Affinity Photo?

As for the process, Im wondering if I should be looking at trying to manipulate the colors and effects of the photo itself? Or should I be trying to make or download my own flame brushes that would then be used on a pixel layer applied over the photo? Or should I be looking for vector /image brushes?

Hi Chris, Thanks for the response. I did see that tutorial yesterday and did just as you suggest. It is pretty much what I ended up doing. But first, I spent all night tinkering with the colors / inner glow effect / blend modes in the base pixel image I am trying to enhance. I got it to look like it was glowing with fire and then downloaded some Pixel flame brushes. I took those and just experimented for hours with dabbing the different flame patterns here and there.
