Uponimaging a Surface Laptop 2 with our basic image from the older Surface laptop model the Surface Hid Mini Driver driver fails to power and thus the keyboard doesn't work. if I revert back to 03/27/2017 driver it works fine... but then the laptop automatically updates itself to the latest version that brakes again. I have blocked the update in WSUS.
Is anybody aware of a fix for the latest driver? Does the PC somehow think its a Surface Laptop 1st gen and somehow downloading the incorrect driver possibly? I also downloaded the latest firmware/driver package from MS and tried that version and it also doesn't work. Seems to be the same exact version that gets downloaded from Windows Update.
@WC_KStil did you ever get the specific version of the driver that works? I keep running into this issue every update cycle. I have a surface laptop 2 and the "Surface Hid Mini Driver" flakes out every update. I've tried the all of the drivers from Download Surface Laptop 2 Drivers and Firmware from Official Microsoft Download Center :
I've tried uninstalling the driver and re-installing but that never seems to work, even disabling the driver and re-enabling doesn't work. I'm not sure what happens in UEFI entry, but that seems to make it work again for me. Beware - your mileage may vary!!! This seems to be a very common issue but different tasks seem to work for different people. I sure hope Microsoft can fix this as it is a pain as it usually happens when I really need to get some work done!
Sign in and select Surface Laptop 2 and input your Surface's serial number. Click on Download and Save it to your desktop. Do not download the Recovery Image directly on the USB drive but on the Downloads folder on the computer.
@GBowlsby - this worked perfectly. Frustratingly, I'd foolishly listened to other ideas with consequences that'll now cost me even more time (somehow our AI/ML needs to intercept bad or half-arse solutions with ones that actually work :)) Regardless to my live 'en learn: Thanks!
I bought an SP4 ages ago just to put Linux on it. At first, I used the Tigerite kernel, which worked well with no issues for me. After updating to 18.04 and getting the first official 5.0 kernel I have ever used on my SP4, almost everything works.
The only thing that does not work is the touchscreen, which includes the pen, which I couldn't care less about. No complaints on the current Ubuntu version. I have a working keyboard, touchpad, power saving (suspend, hibernate), Bluetooth, graphics drivers and more!
However, I tried to use the Jakeday kernel and had nothing but WiFi issues. The WiFi kept dropping and giving an auth error, but the touchscreen did work. So, I switched back to the official kernel and had no more problems. Use these custom kernels at your own risk.
You didn't provide any information as to what type of surface you own, so I'll give you a blanket solution, and refine it if you edit your question. Before you try this, please try giving us more information, such as your Ubuntu version(16.04,19.10, etc.), the output of lsusb and what type of surface you own(year, model number, serial number, and most importantly, keyboard serial number).
Type Cover (2017): Partially Working, touchpad Multi-Touch works, sometimes detaching/re-attaching results in a buggy experience, little to no debugging has been done on the issue. The keyboard itself does not work. This is almost certainly remediable by adding the device ID's into the Linux kernel, so, please report the device ID's (and please differentiate your model of Type Cover (i.e. with Biometrics, without Biometrics, Signature, etc.)
Surface Laptop Integrated Keyboard/Trackpad: Partially Working, touchpad Multi-Touch works, the keyboard itself does not work. This is almost certainly remediable by adding the device ID's into the Linux kernel, so please report the device ID's.
I tried changing it through settings of my Windows 11 but no help! No matter what profile I choose in Adrenalin, the problem persists! Once I remove Adrenalin and restart, the problem is gone! Any comments?
Hi, I have the same issue after upgrading my Surface 4 AMD with the latest Adrenalin drivers. The brightness drops way too much as soon as you go to 99% below. One is pretty much stuck on 100% permanently /-: Did you find a solution? These new drivers are a major upgrade over the ones Microsoft provides. Even in the latest Surface 4 AMD Microsoft upgrade no new graphics driver is provided for the 2021 one /-:
Hi I downloaded the exact Surface driver you're pointing out... Initially, I installed driver only & after some time dealing with the display brightness issue I did a minimal install to get a AMD configuration app but that didn't offer any options to get it sorted. I then uninstalled the AMD Adrenalin driver, installed the latest Microsoft Surface Surface Laptop 4 AMD update from last December in the hope that it would contain a AMD graphics driver update but it resulted in the same old 2021 Microsoft graphics driver so I reinstalled the Adrenalin driver by extracting the msi file and and doing a driver update through device manager. Brightness problem is still an issue but the Adrenalin driver is a major performance upgrade over the old 2021 driver. I can now even use the internal GPU to assist in rendering 3D scenes in Blender for example...
I never installed any AMD drivers before. These Microsoft Surface devices have become so OEM specific that you cant even just do a clean Windows OS install anymore but have to download a 9GB special Surface install file /-: I was actually very surprised to find a Microsoft Surface specific driver for my Surface Laptop 4 on the AMD website. I was even more surprised that it is a major upgrade over the Microsoft provided graphics driver. Apart from the brightness bug it is appears to be very stable and without issues. I guess not many Surface Laptop 4 users have installed this driver yet simply because they are not aware it exists. Microsoft will surely never make it available in their updates because they want to sell the newer surface laptops. I will open a support ticket. Thanks very much for your support.
Hi, friend. I ran into exactly the same problem, but I have a Laptop 3 on a ryzen7 3780u. The problems started with drivers released since May 2023. The April drivers are working correctly. On the official AMD website, I found an archive with all the drivers ( I attach the link for my processor as an example -drivers/apu/amd-ryzen-processors/amd-ryzen-7-mobile-processo... ). I am very surprised that the problem has been going on for six months, and AMD continues to release non-working drivers!
I therefore set about updating the USB installation drive with the drivers needed. The first Step was to download the latest Drivers and Firmware package, I used the links found at -us/surface/enable-surface-keyboard-for-windows-pe-deployment#add-keyboard-drivers-to-the-selection-profile helpfully the page confirms which of the drivers are actually needed.
The rest of that Microsoft page describes updating an image using MDT so things are a little different when updating the USB media, but the main thing to note is the minimum drivers required to add the keyboard functionality (for each model of surface device listed).
The boot.wim file has two parts to it, Windows Install and Windows PE. To be on the safe side I decided to update both using the following powershell. This needs to be updated to point at the correct locations but hopefully is self-explanatory.
Depending on the installation media the file we need could be install.wim, but it is most likely to be the more modern install.esd. In my case it was install.esd and again it is found in the sources folder on the USB drive.
