VESTRY NEWS - RECTOR TRANSITION

It is a tradition in the Episcopal Church to wait until the resigning rector leaves office before forming a search committee and interviewing interim candidates.  For those of you who are long time members at Epiphany, you are familiar with the process.  To the newer members we say, don’t be intimidated.  There are well established procedures for the hiring of a new rector and at Epiphany we are experienced!  Your vestry is confident that our excellent staff and clergy can maintain the high quality, day-to-day operations at Epiphany while we search for our new rector.

Over the next several weeks, the vestry will be hard at work.  We have received the names of several interim-priest candidates.  Our intention is to interview and hire an interim within a month.  Ideally, the interim priest will be in place by the beginning of June.

At our March vestry meeting, we formalized the structure of the Rector Search Committee.  It will be a twelve member committee plus one non-voting vestry liaison.  Now, the vestry needs to populate the committee.  We are continuing to collect names of church members who have expressed an interest in serving on the search committee.  Please, if you have an interest in serving, or would like to nominate someone, submit your name today!  All church members interested in serving should also complete our search committee questionnaire.  This will help us assess skills and talents.  Questionnaires are located at the back of the church, in the church office, and online.

The vestry would like to have the names of some of our newer members on the list.  Your input is important to the church.  Placing your name on the list and submitting a completed questionnaire does not commit you to anything at this time.  It simply means that you are interested and would like to have a discussion about what is involved.  The cut-off date is April 14.  Please submit your name to Nancy Winningham, Clerk of the Vestry, or Craig DeBrine, Sr. Warden; contact information is on the back of the service bulletin.

The vestry appreciates your patience over the past six weeks and thanks you for your support and encouragement.  Special thanks to all who contributed food, gifts, and acknowledgements at Gail’s farewell party last Sunday.  It was an excellent send off.

San Carlos Choral Festival Tonight, April 6, 2008
For the first time in over 20 years, several of the choirs of the churches in San Carlos will come together to sing for each other and then combine for several numbers. This choral festival is a real joy for all the choirs. Epiphany Choir will reprise The Days of Christ by Craig Courtney, which they did for Palm Sunday. Each choir will present two or three numbers individually and then sing together for a wonderful evening of choral and praise music.

The choirs of Trinity Presbyterian, Epiphany Episcopal, St. Charles Catholic and ensembles from the First Baptist church invite you to join us for this holy hubbub at 7 pm at St. Charles Catholic Church, 880 Tamarack Avenue, San Carlos. is a wonderful way to support your choir and to hear what music others are doing in the community.

MEMORIAL PIANO
The Vestry members along with Cortlandt Bender, Minister of Music, are pleased to announce the purchase of the Kent Nowels Memorial Piano. This instrument, a 1927 Steinway Model A, is made possible by a generous gift to the congregation from Kent’s estate. Its quality is unsurpassed in instruments of its size.  This piano will replace the one on loan from the Nowels Family. A story about our new instrument will appear in the May Beacon. This historic piano will serve the congregation well for years and years.

Spring is in the air — Plant a tree
PG&E's 30 Simple Energy Things You Can Do To Save The Earth offers this energy information to consider when planting this spring:

·   In the summer, your home traps heat when the sun shines directly on it — which means more energy is required to cool it. But if your home is shaded by the leafy branches of trees, it will stay cooler naturally.

·   In the winter, though, you want the sun to shine on your home and warm it up. Luckily, the leaves of deciduous trees fall off in winter — letting the sun shine through.

·   By blocking the wind, some non-deciduous trees can help reduce the amount of cold air reaching your home. When this happens, it takes less energy to keep your home warm inside.
