Inaddition to interviewing the seven officers involved, special agent in charge Mike Ayers said Monday that it will take time to receive results of the autopsy on 34-year-old Thomas Wayne Swinford before the GBI can submit its findings to the Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney Office for review.

Swinford, who reportedly stole a vehicle from a family member in Athens on Friday evening, was shot by police while holding what authorities later described as an airsoft gun, a type of toy weapon that uses electric, gas or a spring to launch a BB and can look very similar to an actual gun.

At a news conference Sunday, police released a composite of officer body camera video footage of the shooting that showed Swinford disregarding officers' commands to drop the weapon and then walking toward them with it pointed.

A news release issued Saturday by the GBI confirmed Athens-Clarke Clarke County Police Chief Cleveland Spruill's assessment of the video footage, that multiple officers fatally shot Swinford as he charged at them with the BB gun pointed in their direction.

As police investigated those reports earlier in the day on Friday, officers spotted Swinford carrying what appeared to be a firearm, Spruill said. But they didn't know at that time he was a convicted felon.

According to Clarke County Superior Court records, Swinford was arrested in 2004 in connection with an armed robbery at a Golden Pantry. Indicted on charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault, Swinford pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to five years in prison and 10 years on probation, court records indicated.

The officers who fired their guns were placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal affairs investigation into their actions. Those officers were identified by police as Officer C.J. Bidinger, Officer 1st Class William Greenlow, Officer Claude Johnson, Cpl. Alex Leder, Sgt. Jonathan McIlvaine, Officer Joshua Santos and Officer Roger Williams.

Spruill expressed his condolences to Swinford's family during Sunday's news conference. "Our officers understand our highest value is the preservation of human life," he said, noting that deadly force only is employed under the threat of serious injury or death to an officer or the public.

"What I will say is our officers are exercising remarkable restraint," Spruill said as he narrated the video that played during the news conference. "You've got a man with a gun walking toward you ... disregarding commands."

Spruill showed journalists an image of the airsoft gun Swinford carried at the time of his shooting. The weapon bore no markings that would distinguish it as a BB gun without a close inspection, Spruill suggested.

"They are exercising remarkable restraint in that they're not firing now," Spruill said during the portion of the video that showed Swinford walking toward police, but prior to him pointing the weapon at officers.

Body-mounted camera footage released from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department press conference on March 10 at 4:30 p.m. depicted multiple points of view of the fatal shooting of 34-year-old male Thomas Swinford, who was armed with an airsoft gun.

As Swinford quickly approached the officers after a 20-minute standoff, he raised the weapon in his right hand. At this time, according to Spruill, the officers on the scene feared for their lives and fired their weapons at Swinford. Swinford was struck, fell to the ground, and officers transported him to the hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

Later that evening, ACC police officers responded to this same residence to follow up on this case. At this point, they encountered Swinford with the firearm still in his possession. Swinford then got into a car and fled the scene. Officers followed and found him in the 800 block of West Lake Drive where the actual shooting occurred.

Airsoft is a recreational activity that involves shooting plastic pellets with an airsoft gun. The pellets are typically 6mm in size and are made of either biodegradable plastic or polyethylene. Airsoft games often involve tactics and strategy similar to paintball, but without the mess.

The minimum age to play at Nashville airsoft is 10 years old with a parental guardian and 16+ years old without. We also will be introducing nerf guns so a younger audience can play on the field soon.

The cost of playing airsoft can vary depending on the venue and equipment used. Generally, it costs around $20-65 per person to cover basic expenses like ammunition and field fees. Some venues may also require additional safety equipment such as protective masks or goggles, which can add to the total cost.

Players must submit an online recording request form and have the request approved to use any recording device including but not limited to GoPros, Contours, and cell phones within active gameplay. If a player has not been approved for a recording pass or has been denied and is found recording or having been recording during the session, the footage will be wiped, and they will be immediately removed from the facility without refund and a minimum 1 month ban will be enacted.

Management holds the right to revoke a recording pass at any time for any reason. If a player arrives with a recording device and has been banned from using it, our staff hold the right to keep the device at our front desk during the session if they believe the player will attempt to use the device even after being told they are prohibited from doing so. If a player is argumentative about this policy, staff hold the right to remove the player from the facility without refund.

It is unfortunate that this policy has to be implemented, but our ultimate goal is to encourage a safe facility for our staff, safe gameplay for our players and discourage clout chasers who are trying to make a name for themselves online by playing and highlighting dangerous gameplay, especially when it involves unwilling participants.

This allows us to ensure that the adult in fact knows the child, that we are able to check-in the correct player waiver for players who share the same/similar name to other players, and that we can decrease the opportunities for players to sneak in under false names.
